Description

All about the Role

A Youth Justice Officer (YJO) plays a key role in supporting children and young people who are involved in or at risk of entering the criminal justice system. Their role is about more than monitoring behaviour—they build meaningful relationships, assess needs and risks, and help children and young people make positive changes in their lives. Working closely with families, schools, social care, and other agencies, YJOs develop tailored intervention plans, offer guidance, and encourage accountability while always keeping the young person's safety and wellbeing at the centre. Their work is grounded in promoting rehabilitation, reducing reoffending, and supporting a safer future for the child, young person and the wider community.

In addition to supporting children through tailored interventions, Youth Justice Officers play an important role in promoting restorative justice and helping repair harm. This means creating safe spaces where young people can reflect on the impact of their actions—not just on themselves, but on others and their community. Where appropriate, YJO alongside the restorative justice team help facilitate conversations or activities that allow young people to take responsibility, understand consequences, and make amends in meaningful ways.

All about our Team

Peterborough Youth Justice Team is a group of dedicated professionals who work with children and young people involved in the criminal justice system. Their role is to understand the reasons behind a child or young person's behaviour and to offer the right support to help them make positive changes. The team includes Youth Justice Officers, health and education professionals, police, all working together to reduce reoffending, promote rehabilitation, and keep the community safe.

They build relationships with children and young people, assess their needs and concerns for others, and develop tailored intervention plans. Peterborough Youth Justice Team also focuses on restorative justice—giving young people the chance to understand the impact of their actions, take responsibility, and repair harm where possible. Everything they do is centred around keeping the child's wellbeing at the heart of the process.
