Released in 1986, the A70 generation Toyota Supra was launched when RWD layouts were being replaced by FWD hot hatches.

Toyota harnessed and improved the appeal of what was considered an outdated trend. However, this was no dinosaur. The high-efficiency multivalve engine, anti-lock braking, computer-aided geometry on the suspension layout and electronic damper control shifted the Supra upmarket and became a showcase for Toyota's technology. Powered by a 3.0-litre 200BHP straight-six fuel-injected engine mounted under an expanse of a bonnet, the Supra proved to fulfil its role as the brand's flagship sporting model. For those looking for refinement, performance and comfort in a stylish and fully equipped package, buyers were also reassured by the traditional virtues of a Toyota. Offering plenty of practicality, ease of driving, reasonable running costs and, of course, a legendary reputation for reliability, there was no sacrifice in core values.
