We’ve used this absolutely brilliant, highly flexible, quick to pitch roof tent and annex, mounted on a roof rack on our Land Rover Discovery 2, to go on off-road adventures and expeditions in the UK and Iceland and for camping in the UK as a couple. No longer using so selling to make space in the garage.

Manufactured by Autocamp, a German company, the manufacturing quality is excellent. The roof tent is made from Airtex, a modern breathable 100% waterproof material, which is considerably lighter than canvas and also fire proof. Airtex is extremely tear resistant and washable and moreover, because it is resistant to mould and fungal spots the tent can be packed away wet, which is great for trips in the UK. The tent does not require an external flysheet to keep the water off and as such is considerably quieter and is also much easier and quicker to assemble and fold away. For insulation the tent is fitted with a cotton liner.

The Marco polo also has a down to the ground annex with the ladder to access the roof tent inside it. This practical upgrade for touring and camping allows occupants additional privacy and provides an additional living space to relax and take shelter from the weather and/or get changed or cook. The annex has 4 sides with skirts on all sides to eliminate drafts when shut. The front of the roof tent and all of the annex sides can be unzipped and rolled up to allow you to enjoy your surroundings and the views. Also, the front of the roof tent and any one of the sides can be propped up on poles to provide shade in the form of an awning/canopy.

The tent base board/sleeping area has been customised and extended in length by 30cm either side of the central ladder to give a longer sleeping area. The annex has also been customised to add additional height to the sides to suit our taller vehicle and a panel that unzips was added to the back side of the annex to allow access to the rear of our vehicle. (Note this panel suits our Land Rover Discovery 2 and allows the back door of the Discovery to open inside the annex but may not suit/work with other vehicles. If this panel doesn’t work for your vehicle, the back side itself can be independently unzipped and rolled up instead.)

• Has been stored inside in garage when not in use

• Size of complete tent + annex unit closed and packed up = 175cm x 145cm x 35cm
• Size of roof tent sleeping area / original mattresses = 150cm wide x 187cm long + there is another 50cm wide x 30cm long extension for your feet or storage at the end of the mattress on each side of ladder
• Maximum headroom in roof tent = 105cm
• Footprint of annex on ground = 154cm wide by 108cm deep
• Height of annex suits taller vehicles e.g. 4x4s, pickup trucks and vans – annex sides could probably cope with a height from the ground to the mounting point of the tent (e.g. top of roof rack or roof bars) of between approx. 190cm and 215cm

Included with the tent and annex are:
• A heavy duty waterproof travel cover to protect the tent when packed away and travelling
• 2 high density 70mm thick foam mattresses with removable washable covers
• Adjustable height ladder (in 2 sections; packs away on top of folded tent)
• Loose ground sheet for annex
• Pegs and guy ropes to secure annex to ground
• Custom made aluminium ground frame + pegs – use is optional but makes for speedier and easier pitching (packs away on top of folded tent)
• 2 telescopic poles with guy ropes to raise any one side of the annex to form an awning/canopy

The tent and annex have the following features:
• The tent can be mounted on a roof rack or roof bars and can be positioned to open over the back or side of a vehicle
• Sleeps 2 comfortably
• Room to store bedding inside tent when folded up + space to store all additional items (ladder, ground frame, pegs and poles etc) on top of tent once folded under the waterproof travel cover
• Storage pockets in the sleeping area
• The door at the front of the roof tent sleeping area can be rolled up or propped open as an awning/canopy to provide shade using extendable poles that fold out from the base board.
• 2 vents on the side of the roof tent (one on each side) for ventilation that can be opened/closed from the sleeping area
• Although the ladder is required to access the roof tent sleeping area, the roof tent base board is self-supporting so the ladder can be removed when you are using the annex area
• 12V light fitted to base board of tent above annex area – will need connecting to suitable 12V power source
• The annex sides have 2 way zips on the front zips and 3 way zips on the back zips (see pictures) allowing lots of options to exit or ventilate the annex.
• Each of the sides of the annex can be opened/rolled up independently whilst the remaining sides remain fixed to the ground or ground frame
• Any 1 of the 3 external sides of the annex can be propped up with extendable poles to create an awning/canopy to sit under or provide shade
• Window, with blind in rear side of the annex
• All doors on the tent and annex that unzip can be rolled up and secured with straps
