Job Purpose

To provide targeted pastoral, academic and social-emotional support to pupils who are experiencing barriers to learning. The Student Mentor will work closely with teachers, heads of year, parents and external agencies to help students improve attendance, behaviour, engagement and achievement.

Key Responsibilities

1:1 Mentoring: Provide regular one-to-one support for identified pupils, setting goals and monitoring progress.

Academic Support: Help students develop study skills, organisation and revision strategies to improve attainment.

Pastoral Support: Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils; offer guidance on personal, social and emotional issues.

Behaviour & Attendance: Work with the pastoral team to address behavioural issues and improve attendance.

Group Sessions: Plan and deliver small-group workshops on topics such as resilience, wellbeing, anti-bullying, online safety, or exam preparation.

Safeguarding: Act as an additional point of contact for safeguarding concerns, following school procedures and policies.

Liaison: Communicate effectively with teaching staff, parents/carers and external professionals to coordinate support plans.

Monitoring & Reporting: Keep accurate records of interventions and report on pupil progress to line managers.

Enrichment: Support extracurricular activities, trips, or clubs to boost engagement and inclusion.

Person Specification (Essential)

Experience of working with young people aged 11–18 in an educational or youth work setting.

Understanding of safeguarding, child protection and confidentiality.

Ability to motivate and build rapport with pupils from diverse backgrounds.

Good organisational, record-keeping and communication skills.

Awareness of issues affecting secondary-age students, including mental health and social pressures.

Desirable:

Relevant qualification in youth work, mentoring, counselling or education support.

Experience of delivering small-group interventions or workshops.

First Aid or Mental Health First Aid training
