Position: SEN Teaching Assistant

Setting: Specialist Autism School - Secondary Age Only (11-16)

Start Date: September 2025

Contract: Long-Term

Tradewind Recruitment is working with a small, specialist autism school in East Ham, supporting their search for an experienced and dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to work with secondary-aged pupils only (11-16 years) from September.

This unique setting caters to students with moderate to severe autism, many of whom are non-verbal and require consistent routines, tailored support plans, and a therapeutic approach to learning. The school prides itself on its inclusive ethos, supportive team, and calm, structured environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide classroom and 1:1 support to pupils aged 11-16 with autism and associated needs

Support non-verbal learners using alternative communication methods (PECS, Makaton, AAC)

Assist with sensory activities, personal development, and emotional regulation

Maintain structured routines and promote independence and engagement

Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and SENCOs to deliver consistent, child-focused support

What We're Looking For:

Experience working with secondary-aged pupils with autism or complex SEN

Confidence in using or learning communication tools such as PECS or Makaton

Resilient, nurturing, and calm personality

Ability to build rapport with both verbal and non-verbal learners

Team player committed to supporting inclusive education
