Teaching Assistant

Full-time (Permanent) Position

Location: Christchurch

Start Date: ASAP

About the School and Role

An Alternative Provision school located in Christchurch is actively recruiting for dedicated 1-1 Teaching Assistants to join their team. The school specialises in providing tailored educational support for students aged 6 to 16 who face social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) challenges, as well as those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other complex needs. These needs may include trauma, school phobia, Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA), and Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD). Every student at the school has an Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP), ensuring individualised support to meet their specific requirements.

The successful Teaching Assistant will play a vital role in supporting students on a 1-1 basis, helping them access the curriculum, overcome learning barriers, and develop emotional resilience. Your responsibilities will include providing tailored academic support, fostering a positive and safe environment, and working closely with teachers, carers, and other professionals to promote the overall wellbeing and progress of each student.

Key Responsibilities

Deliver personalised academic support to students with complex needs

Support students in overcoming emotional and behavioural challenges

Assist in implementing strategies outlined in EHCPs

Foster a nurturing environment that promotes confidence and independence

Collaborate with staff and external professionals to develop and review student progress

Requirements

The ideal candidate will have:

Experience working with primary and/or secondary school-aged children

Previous experience supporting pupils with SEND, SEMH needs, or similar challenges

A genuine passion for supporting pupils’ educational and personal development

Strong teamwork skills and the ability to work collaboratively with staff and external agencies

Empathy, patience, and resilience in working with vulnerable learners

While prior experience working with pupils with SEMH or SEND is highly desirable, we welcome applications from candidates with backgrounds in care, youth work, mental health support, sports coaching, or other roles involving working with young people with complex needs. Training and ongoing support will be provided to successful applicants.

What we offer

As part of our team, you benefit from:

· Excellent daily rates paid using the PAYE system. (Daily rate is subject to your scale rate, experience in role and qualifications which will be discussed at the point of registration).

· Guaranteed pay scheme (subject to availability).

· Social and networking events.

· Pension contributions.

· CPD to help with your professional development.

· Access to a dedicated consultant.
