Description

We are looking for a dedicated and compassionate English Teacher to join an alternative provision in the Colchester area. This full–time, permanent role offers the opportunity to teach in a highly supportive environment designed for young people aged between 11–17 with SEN and SEMH needs who require an alternative to mainstream education.

As an English Teacher in this specialist setting, you will deliver engaging, creative, and differentiated lessons that focus on building both academic skills and confidence. Class sizes are small, allowing you to tailor learning to individual needs and truly make an impact. You will work closely with a skilled, multi–disciplinary team who share a commitment to therapeutic, student–centred practice.

This is a rewarding opportunity for a teacher with resilience, empathy, and the ability to think creatively about learning. The provision places high value on staff wellbeing, continuous professional development, and maintaining a supportive, collaborative culture. In return, you will receive a competitive salary and excellent benefits, along with regular opportunities for training and progression.

If you are passionate about helping young people re–engage with English and achieve their potential, this role could be the perfect fit.

Key Responsibilities

Plan and deliver engaging English lessons tailored to SEN and SEMH learners

Adapt the curriculum to meet individual needs in small group and one–to–one settings

Support students in developing literacy skills and confidence

Work collaboratively with colleagues, therapists, and support staff

Track student progress and contribute to IEP targets and reviews

Create a safe, structured, and inclusive classroom environment

Engage in CPD and staff development activities

Qualifications and Experience

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS or equivalent)

Strong subject knowledge and passion for English

Experience teaching students with SEN/SEMH or in alternative provision (desirable)

Excellent communication and relationship–building skills

Ability to maintain patience, consistency, and positivity in challenging situations

Commitment to inclusive, therapeutic approaches to education
