Job Title: Teaching Assistant - PRU / Alternative Provision

Location: Romford

Contract Type: Permenant

We are working closely with a specialist alternate provision that is committed to supporting children and young people who face barriers to learning in mainstream education. Their setting offers a safe, nurturing, and structured environment where every student is given the opportunity to succeed-academically, socially, and emotionally.

We are seeking a resilient, compassionate, and motivated Teaching Assistant to join our team. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about making a difference in the lives of vulnerable learners with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs, challenging behaviour, or other complex needs.

Key Responsibilities

Assist the class teacher in delivering engaging, inclusive, and adapted lessons

Support students in managing their emotions and behaviour in a positive, proactive way

Build strong, trusting relationships with students, helping to boost confidence, engagement, and achievement

Help to implement individual learning plans and behaviour strategies

Support with the daily running of the classroom and maintain a safe, structured learning environment

Liaise with teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals to support holistic development

Person Specification

Essential:

Experience working with children or young people with additional needs, preferably in a PRU, alternative provision, or similar setting

Strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills

Patience, empathy, and the ability to remain calm under pressure

Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children

Excellent communication and teamwork skills

Desirable:

Relevant qualifications (e.g., Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant, Youth Work, or Psychology)

Experience with SEMH, trauma-informed practice, or restorative approaches

Understanding of EHCPs, safeguarding procedures, and SEND Code of Practice
