Description
1989 Suzuki GS500 Hardtail Chop
Alright, here's the deal. This ain't no shiny show pony – it's a proper garage-built, knuckle-busting, shed-swearing, tea-fueled custom chop that actually gets ridden. I’ve owned it for 9 years – 5 of those it spent in "project purgatory" while I kept buying other bikes (we’ve all been there). But once it was done, it’s been flying past Sportsters and confusing Harley riders ever since.
The Build (aka: how I lost a lot of weekends):
Frame: Custom hardtail, built in Wales using the original GS500 headstock I posted off like a weird mechanical pen pal
Running Gear: All Suzuki GS500 stuff – solid and reliable and easy to find for replacement parts
Tank: From a Yamaha DragStar with a Kawasaki KLE650 fuel tap (Frankenstein would be proud)
Bars: 12” ape hangers – you'll feel like you're steering a pirate ship
Switchgear: Original Suzuki – it all works
Battery Box: Shiny stainless steel job
Controls: Harley forward controls – cheap and cheerful eBay special
Front and rear fitted – keeps the mud mostly off your back
Seat: eBay special – it'll hold your bum, just don’t expect gel inserts
Running Gear & Engine Stuff:
Just serviced: fresh oil, new filter, new spark plugs – even threw in a spare filter because I got a 2-for-1
Carbs were cleaned and rebuilt about 18 months ago – still running great
Manual cam chain tensioner fitted (for those who don't trust the automatic ones)
Running on pod filters – upjetted and tuned to behave. Starts, idles, and rides just fine
Tyres: Rear is Dunlop, front is Continental – both have loads of life
Condition:
It’s not perfect, but it’s perfectly usable
Paint has a few chips and marks – comes with a bit of "character"
Exhaust works, sounds decent, but could do with redoing if you're fussy (or bored and want another mini project)
Other Bits:
MOT 9th September 2026– no advisories the last three years
Mileage: about 24,000 – engine has around 19k then got about another 5k on the current speedo
A2 licence friendly – so your younger cousin can ride it and feel cooler than their mates with Chinese 125s
Price: £2,150
Will consider swaps – NO 125s or off-roaders unless they come with emotional support goats.
If you're after a one-of-a-kind chop that turns heads, makes people ask, “What the hell is that?” (in a good way), and is actually fun to ride – this is your beast.
