The Absent-Minded Beggar - Boer War Fund Raising handkerchief - 1899.

The scarf was made to raise money for the Soldiers' Families Fund after the outbreak of the Second Boer War (1899-1902), part of an appeal by The Daily Mail, one of a large quantity of merchandise sold to raise money for soldiers fighting in the South African War and their families. The fund was the first charitable effort in Britain for a war.

It has the poem "The Absent-Minded Beggar" written by Rudyard Kipling with the music score by Arthur Sullivan. Also printed is a map of South Africa and portraits of Queen Victoria and Lord Roberts.

A piece of history, over 120 years old, ready to hang on your wall and, instigate curiosity and conversation.

The handkerchief itself measures approximately 44 cm and is presented within a very nice dark wooden frame.
