'We have a little garden,a garden of our own...

Colliers Wood, London

£1.50

Email address verified

Description

..And every day we water there, the seeds that we have sown,
We love our little garden and tend it with such care,
You will not find not find a faded leaf or blighted blossom there'

So wrote philanthropist, conservationist, artist, storyteller & nature lover Beatrix Potter and as a similar lover of all things floral & horticultural I'm here to write & tell you about some of the varied and lovely plants I have for sale at very reasonable prices starting at £1,50.

For those of you Oasis fans or perhaps as a gift to someone you know who loves those bruvs for Madchester,as it's sometimes called, what about these beautiful climbing Ipomea Indica 'Morning Glory' which are definitely 'What's The Story ? and,at a mere £1.50 each,in return for the stunning deep purple trumpet shaped blooms they produce which,as their title suggests, will bring a touch more Glory to your morning story, are well worth popping in the soil and allowing to climb up a hedge,a tree or a wall with some suitably attached trellis in order to bring you a Convolvulus Supernova well into the September and possibly even October should climate change mean,as seems likely, that the seasons and their respective lengths are also on the change.
Amaranthus caudatus are a spectacular and quite often little known about wonder plant that definitely WILL continue to produce amazing flowering red panicles well into October and can grow rapidly to reach between 4' and 8' but be aware that they do not tolerate clay soil.
Many parts of the plant including the leaves and seeds are edible and indeed Amaranthus seeds are a versatile food that can be used in a variety of ways. They can be cooked like rice or quinoa, popped like popcorn, ground into flour for baking, or made into porridge. They also add a unique flavour and texture to salads, soups, and even breakfast cereals.

Amaranthus caudatus is originally from Central and South America and was used as a staple grain by the Inca, Maya and Aztec civilisations. Because of its high nutritional value, it was culturally considered as a beneficial food for children and elderly.

There are only a few of the single potted Amaranthus left at £1.50 each but I also have four in a larger pot which can easily be divided by slicing through the compost with a sharp knife before replanting ,just as Monty Don does and these are four for £5.00 instead of £6.00.
Rhus Typhina Stag Horn Sumac is an unusual but popular shrub because of its brilliant autumn colour. It can be an effective landscaping shrub that can grow into a tree as it matures. It received the RHS Award of Garden Merit in 2002.

Native to a wide swath of eastern and central North America, Rhus typhina has been grown in British gardens for 350 years. Rhus typhina is a tough shrub that grows abundantly in the wild, and it can bring that same toughness to your own landscape. Almost immune to pests and diseases, it provides year-round interest through its foliage and structure. It gets its common name stag’s horn sumac from the velvety covering on the branches.

This lovely specimen is £30.00

If you've some gaps in your border or your cottage garden why not invest a few beautiful, eye catching Rudbeckia, otherwise known as Black eyed Susan ?

These are just about to flower and are, again, only £1.50 each or,as with the Amaranthus, four in a larger pot for £5.00 which can be similarly divided by cutting through the compost with a sharp blade and, popped into the soil and watered will continue to flower into late autumn and up until the first frosts.

Herbalicious herbs are always useful for flavouring soups, stews, roasts and in the case of mint, delicious when added with parsley to Taboulleh and though I've sold out of parsley I do still have some pots of aromatic peppermint at £2,50 per pot and rosemary at £3.50.

Occasionally a hedging plant may reach the end of it's life and create a gap through which the nosey neighbours and passers by can peek so if you're looking for a healthy specimen of Prunus Laurocerasus Rotundifolia to plug that gap then this happy shiny leaved specimen at the bargain price of £8.00 won't break the bank of ANY hedge fund manager.

For early spring (February to April) colour you can't beat the oriental Hellebore;Helleborus x hybridus' deep red flowers and this large-ish example is a great ground cover plant for areas of dappled shade under deciduous trees and shrubs and at £4.00 is a veritable steal.I do also have a couple of smaller ones for £2.50 each.

When I was a youngster my Granny Emily showed me how to make the flowers of Fuchsias into ballerina by pulling most of the stamens off until there were just two skinny legs with ballet pumps on them and then pushing a thin twig through the part of the flower below what looked like a little head to form the arms and so I've always had and loved the delicate nature of Fuchsias and this example of a Fuchsia microphylla with it's slightly samller and more delicate than usual 'ballerina' flowers small, toothed, leaves up to 4cm long, flushed red when young would be a beautiful addition to any garden and can be grown outside in the summer months in sun or part shade but remember to water it freely and use a general liquid fertiliser monthly from spring to summer. It may be hardy in mild areas or inner city location but otherwise will need frost protection during cold Winters.

The last picture is a stock photo of ,obviously, some Kniphofia which we all know commonly as 'Red hot Pokers' and I have two medium sized specimens if them in 2.5 litre pots for sale which, though they've flowered for this season, will,if you get them in the ground now and feed and water them for the rest of the summer, not only be delighted at being freed from the confines of their plastic pots but also, next year, provide you with an impressive and spectacular display of the aformentioned 'Pokers' for the knock down price of £2.50/ pot.

All species of Kniphofia are native to Africa. The flowers produce copious amounts of nectar while blooming and are therefor attractive to bees and goodness only knows we need to keep those bees returning to our gardens on as regular a basis as possible.

By all means get in touch if any of the above are of interest.I do have some other ,mainly hedging, shrubs available as well as a couple of climbing/rambling roses. One of which is definitely Rosa Banksiae Rose White and the other is,I think, Adélaïde d'Orléans. Both of these are competitively priced at £7.00 each.
