Description

Hi, thanks for taking the time to look at my listing for my 1994 Caterpillar 428B.

Where do I start?, first thing I want to make very clear, I do not need to sell this awesome machine, I do not need the funds this sale will generate, I am in no way desperate to sell, so please if your looking for a cheap bargain close this page & look elsewhere now.

If your looking for a genuine machine with low hours from new, very original & a do it all machine for maybe your self build project or the like and can understand that old saying You get what you pay for then, read on.

This Cat has to be the last, low hour original 428B in the U.K. even go as far as the E.U. and they do not make them like this anymore. A little history lesson and short story will follow....settle in...

Working as a builder 70's - 2000's and having many sites of 300+ homes to build we always needed a digger and various other plant, started off with Case 580, then to the 580K, was good machines but hoses always blowing and working on the arm you always got covered in Hydraulic oil every time!, so that got old very quickly...Just could not warm to JCB's, did not like the way that they used to work on the back arm, felt tinny and no push, then one day in the late 80's we had a rep come to see us from the now no longer H Leverington Caterpillar dealership in Spalding and offered us a test and very good deal to go over to Cat's for our sites, we agreed a deal and never looked back.

Over the time and course of all the building we never had a failure!, never...just routine oils and filters and the machines just kept going and going, with the exception of pin and bush wear and tyres etc, but you would have that on any plant machine to consider.

The original 428 was a very good soild machine but the 428B was refined and at the time the best, simple to use and the push it had and still has is second to none. Will lift anything with in its limits and is just a solid, well built go anywhere machine.

So, to the present day... this Cat was not one of my original machines, this belonged and was bought new by a builder friend who built a small site near Mallory, he bought the machine from the Mallory site and really did not use it in the 20+ years he owned it for hence the very low original hours it done, he was like myself very maintenance minded and liked the job too, this is important I think to make owning plant and in fact anything not a chore to own and maintain, enjoy keeping your toys in good condition!. He finally finished the site and I bought the machine in a heartbeat as your not ever going to find another one like it.

So, when I bought her and got home I stripped her out completely right down to the basics!, cleaned everything up from dust and dirt in the cab, floor plates up etc re greased / copper slip everything then set about a full service inc fuel filters oil filters engine oil gearbox oil and filter (the correct oil!) rear axle oil (inc the important additive) front axle inc halfs, Hydraulic oil change inc filter, Antifreeze, cab air filter, both inner and outer air filters, new aux belts, and anything else I could find to change, brought a lot of old memories back!. I had the fuel tank removed and steam cleaned and powder coated Gloss Black, as the same for the battery box with a stainless hinge, rear mud plates, removed the Quick hitch and had that all blasted and powder coated gloss black, bought the later style headlights and also 8x L.E.D. spotlights and stainless brackets, Had a new windscreen fitted as the old one had a crack, new twin roof beacon with quick release plug mounted on magnets, and one new ram on the back arm as was chipped and had ripped the seal. Put her all back together and have enjoyed every minute ever since!.

The inside of the cab area is very clean and tidy as you can imagine, the roof lining is as new as he never smoked in the cab (I do not smoke either) all the dials and controls are working 100% everything is nice and tight and really is a time warp condition machine to look at and to drive, every switch and lever and dial works!, nothing is broken or worn or needs replacing!, CD player and speakers are aftermarket and sounds great too!. Doors all lock, glass is all there, nothing bent, wipers wipe etc all lights work very well (Bulb upgrade in headlights) even down to a L.E.D rear number plate light.

Battery isolator fitted, unlock the door climb in, unlock the door for the ignition, key in and go...let her warm up and work, that simple...this I feel is where my machine and all of this age and condition (If you could ever find another) is worth the money to invest in as they are the last generation of being built well from soild plate, everything is and was over engineered, not like the later ones or say JCB where everything is thin plate or plastic!, the bucket is never going to bend, the mudguards are solid plate, not plastic!, and the best part of it all is the simple mechanical drive train and non complicated electrics of the machine, its actually something that you, yourself can work on (if ever needed) with out needing a laptop and some expensive software and a man standing there at £150+ an hour to tell you what's wrong with your machine!.

This is my machines selling point....think about it, the whole machine has only worked a 2800hr life... most of them at this age have done 20000+hrs by now and are worn up, this engine/gearbox/drivetrain/electrics/chassis and even the original rear tyres (yes, still on the factory rear tyres!) have only worked 2800hrs, that's nothing....this is why I am not in a rush to sell this Cat.

The machine will start and run all day long in the heat of the summer or the freezing icy mornings of the winter, always starts the same no matter what, same engine sound every time, I will miss that sound. She sits at the same temp on the gauge and never moves, same for volts etc, hydraulics are strong and smooth inc 4in1 and auto return, back arm is strong with the extendahoe its perfect. Has a fitted quick hitch and will come with three buckets, Ditch, 3ft, 2ft. The rear tyres are original on the Cat!, I doubt that there is another one like that anywhere, but helps to prove the hours use, so they are worn but still all ok. The front tyres are new last year after a puncture was decided to replace for a matching pair.

Doors are solid some rust to the lowers but still have that shine to them, paint work is very good with only a little sun fading here and there. Its a machine that you can just get into and go straight to work with out the fear of breakdowns, pipes bursting, engine or drive failure, getting stuck thanks to the 4x4 switch, or just to not have that worry of an old, worn out machine that's costing more to repair every time you use it than your job or project is worth. Trust me, I have been in and around plant and building all my life and have heard and seen it all many times with most if not everyone saying the same old story I wish I had spent the money on something better in the first place.

OK, why am I selling this amazing rare and too good to be true machine your thinking?, simple... in four weeks time she will be sat outside for the first time in her life, as I am loosing my secure storage and looking to move away, so am downsizing all my toys and after a lot of thinking and trying to convince myself that I need to keep her, I sadly do not. Its that simple and straight forward...nothing to hide and no underline reason why.

I have the full V5 & is on SORN atm. I have the original factory owners manuals, the maintenance manual, the original owners pack and booklets that you get when you buy one new, even a huge factory parts manual (rare!), and some paperwork from ownership too, and a special plant tour booklet too that you only get when you buy a new machine from Cat in a binder in a silk bag!.

I will be genuine and say I am sad to be typing all this out, I love this machine and am so very proud of her, I always get comments on how good for the age she is and people can not believe there is still one like it about, always puts a smile on my face.

This will be collection only please, and I am happy to help my end with correct loading onto your low loader, payment can be discussed either cash or bank transfer from a registered U.K. bank with your full I.D. and one utility bill from the last three months. If payment in cash then it needs to be fresh bank notes, stamped and dated drawn out from my local branch of your bank in person, I am sure you understand if your a genuine person like myself.

I am in no way interested in any Part exchange, deal or anything else, not interested in any brokers or internet based selling interference, no over seas royals, scams or princes.

Just a straight forward sale to a genuine person ONLY. I am a fair man to deal with and like to help all I can, but have a VERY short straw and patience level for the fools of this world we now live in.
