“Al-Fresco Toilette” Sir Samuel Luke Fildes - Print on canvas 80cm x 54cm

Ipswich, Suffolk

£80

Email address verified

Description

On offer is a large oleograph ‘print’ onto canvas which is as close in style and texture as you can get to the original

It is titled “Al-Fresco Toilette” from an original by Sir Samuel ‘Luke’ Fildes and bears a signature bottom right
It measures (frame) 80cm/31.5” x 54cm/21.5”
This is a vintage picture, print signed, of excellent quality as you can see by the colour and the detail,
Framed in a huge chunky solid frame. Too large and heavy to post

Fildes took inspiration for this piece from a visit to Venice and it depicts a group of women preparing for the Fiesta. He was much criticised at the time for moving away from “more classical” subjects, but I think it’s great.
It’s almost Pre-Raphalite in style and use of such vibrant colours. Very daring!

I can no longer keep it as I am slimming down my art collection as sadly I no longer have anywhere to hang it currently so it’s got to be sold.

Please contact me for collection details from IP4 2UP

An Al-Fresco Toilette by Samuel Luke Fildes (1843-1927).
The original is owned by Lady Lever Art Gallery on Merseyside.

Sir Samuel Luke Fildes was born in Liverpool and trained at the South Kensington and Royal Academy Schools. He was the grandson of the political activist Mary Fildes.

The Neo-Venetian School was an international group of artists painting an idealised version of the everyday life of working-class inhabitants of Venice in the 1880s and 1890s. Fildes briefly belonged to this school, painting this work 1887-9, before turning to portraiture around 1890.

Here he has contrasted the grandeur of 16th and 17th-century Venetian palaces with the frivolity of their late 19th century tenants. In fact, the palace was the studio of the artist's brotherin-law and the models included his wife and young son. The artificiality of the final result may have suggested to the artist that he should seek other subjects, although his command of grouping and pose is remarkable.
