Description
Boosey and Hawkes Excelsior Double Bass, 3/4 size
Swell backed, laminated, but with a nice mature, warm sound.
A Czech made bass, imported by Boosey and Hawkes in the 1960’s
Currently strung with Spirocore strings on the E and A and Evah Pirazzi (hybrid) strings on the D and G. This is a reasonable compromise for combined jazz and classical playing. I have a spare set of Flexocore delux (Classical strings, quite bright) I can fit on request.
Fitted with a E string extension. Home made but very effective, allows playing of low Eb and D when used.
Much improvement over the years I have had it, including:
Planing of the fingerboard to eliminate buzzing
New floor spike
Ebony tailpiece to improve sound
New, height adjustable bridge (for different strings)
Includes French style bow, recently rehaired
Includes bow quiver
Includes double bass stand.
I play both classical and jazz/band music. This is ideal for jazz gigs as it is so robust and has a great tone with the Spirocores. I have used a Realist pickup on it (which I have moved to my new bass).
I originally worked my way through the classical bass grades on this, and it is a quality classical student instrument. I have replaced it with a carved wood classical bass, which amplifies jazz music with the pickup very nicely as well, hence this sale.
Collect only. Thanks for looking.
