For sale very rare, original, black 'J16' Rocking Chair designed by Hans J. Wegner (famous danish designer) in 1944 and manufactured by F.D.B. Mobler in Denmark in 1962. Wegner stresses the importance of freedom of movement and ergonomics in his chair design - features particularly embodied by the rocking chair. This shaker inspired chair is a real eye catching piece of vintage retro, danish furniture which is still in production since 1944. A stunning collectable piece of danish design, that would look fabulous in any interior.

Hans J. Wegner (April 2, 1914 - January 26, 2007) was a world renowned Danish furniture designer and must be considered as one of the most influential designers of the 20th century. Wegner has become a worldwide icon, particularly famous for his influence on Danish furniture design. Son of a shoe-maker in southern Jutland, Wegner began his long career at the age of 14. He trained as a cabinet-maker before attending the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts, where he later lectured from 1946 to 1953. From 1938 to 1942, he worked as a furniture designer in Arne Jacobsen and Erik Moller's architectural practice. In 1943, he set up his own office in Gentofte and collaborated with Borge Mogensen in the design of an apartment shown at the 1946 Cabinetmakers Exhibition in Copenhagen. Throughout his long career, he has designed furniture extensively for Johannes Hansen and Fritz Hansen. The Royal Society of Arts, London, made him an Honorary Royal Designers for Industry in 1959. His high quality and thoughtful work, along with a concerted effort from several of his manufacturers, contributed to the international popularity of mid-century Danish design. His style is often described as Organic Functionality, a modernist school with emphasis on functionality. This school of thought arose primarily in Scandinavian countries with contributions by Poul Henningsen, Alvar Aalto, and Arne Jacobsen. In his lifetime he designed over 500 different chairs with many different wood types and styles, over 100 of which were put into mass production and many of which have become recognizable design icons. His style is based on clean, simple lines and to Wegner a chair was an artwork as much as a functional object. One of his well-known philosophies was that a chair should be beautiful from every angle and that it should not have a backside. Though Wegner designed for series production, all of his work bears the stamp of the traditionally trained craftsman. Wegner made his mark by entering and winning awards in the annual competition sponsored by the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild. After World War II, he designed the 'J16' Shaker-inspired rocker for the Danish Cooperative Wholesale Society.

Wegner firmly believed that design and function went hand in hand. Wegner summed up his philosophy in a 1979 interview: "There is much confusion today about what is modern, what is functional, and my hope always is that people will not be drawn to novelty but will learn to value what is simple and pure in good design. And things should do the job they are designed for. I don't think that's asking too much".

Sculptural and comfortable, Shaker inspired with a spindled back, curved armrests and woven seat. The chair’s frame is constructed from a solid beech wood, painted black, with handwoven natural paper cord seat. The chair is ergonomically designed to allow freedom of movement the chair is really very comfortable as well as looking good.

This rocking chair has been professionally restored to its original condition. It has been striped of all old paint layers, any dents or scratches removed and it was repainted black. It is free of any damage, splits or wear to joints. The paper cord seat is still in very good, original condition. The chair is stamped 'Made in Denmark 63 12 3 (which is the date it was made December 1963) underneath one of the armrest.
