LUGGIE SUPER PLUS


Every week I have customers ringing me, looking for a folding scooter that will take a larger than average user.



Up to about 130kgs there are plenty of choices, but above that there are very very few.



Fortunately however, Luggie make 4 or 5 scooters that fit the bill.



The most common Luggie is the 'Standard' model and it's a great little scooter.



I used one as my own transport for about 2 years; I took it to places it really shouldn't have gone, up hills it shouldn't have climbed and it just kept going. When I got back to my car it folded in about 30 seconds and fitted into an unfeasibly small space.



I'm a bit of an engineering geek. I like well designed and well made scooters and I really don't get on with ones that aren't.



Luggies are brilliantly designed and are probably the most solidly built folding scooter ever made. Rather than using flimsy materials to achieve light weight and portability, Luggies are designed properly and built with custom castings and solid materials. It's why lesser scooters are on the scrap pile after a few years and Luggies can still be going strong after over a decade of use.



Probably the only downside of the standard Luggie is that it has relatively limited weight capacity. Not a problem for me (80kgs), but not usable if you weigh more than 115kgs.



Whilst I'm only 80kgs, I'm still about 15kgs overweight and struggling to lose it, but as anyone reading this will know, if you're disabled and you can't exercise, losing weight, or even staying the same weight is VERY tough. Consequently, a lot of disabled people are heavier than they might want to be.



Luggie recognised this and so they produced several scooters that will still fold up and go in your car, but are strong enough to take larger users.



The Super Plus is Luggies top 'front wheels together' model.



I'll explain.



Most of the Luggie range uses a 'front wheels together' design. The idea is that this design gives you 4 wheels stability with 3 wheel manoeuvrability. And it does!



The twin front wheels give extra load capacity and stability, but still allow the Luggies to turn around in an incredibly small space.



I mentioned user weight. The Super Plus will take users weighing up to a class leading 164kgs.



The Super Plus uses the wider version of Luggie's chassis, so if your derriere isn't as petite as it once was, the seat on the Super Plus is usefully wider and more comfortable for larger users.



Stability is a big strong point on this scooter, with the wider rear track giving the Super Plus a really 'planted' feel.



The motor on the Super Plus is a larger and more powerful unit giving excellent acceleration and hill climbing ability.



Folding and unfolding is super easy and takes only seconds to do and whilst the Super Plus isn't classed as 'ultra light', for what it can do and given the solidity of the build, the overall weight of 30kgs without battery is very good.



Comfort on Luggies is very good too and I spent many long days on mine without discomfort. My standard model didn't have suspension, but the Super Plus does. It's fitted with Luggie's unique front suspension system, which is simple, lightweight and effective, taking the edge off lumps and bumps and improving ride quality.



Luggies aren't classed as being 'off road' scooters and whilst I can't officially recommend off road use to you, I used mine around National Trust properties and parks and it performed brilliantly. The Super Plus is even better equipped for this sort of use, with its front suspension giving greater comfort and the extra wide rear tyres providing grip on softer terrain.



The Super Plus is one of very few folding scooters that will take heavier users and that in itself makes it worth considering, but whether you weigh 15 stone or 10 stone, the Super Plus is a brilliant scooter.



Made to do the job, not down to a price, the Super Plus is fabulously built and if looked after, will last you a long time. There are lots of 10+ year old Luggies out there, still going strong.



A great machine; comfortable, compact, fun to use and airline friendly too.
