We got this from a vide maison at Bar sur Aube in the Champagne region and have used it as a cloakroom mirror.
It is an attractively aged Faux Bamboo mirror dating to around the 1930s which has a worn frame and a nicely foxed mirror.
Faux Bamboo, made to resemble bamboo, was particularly popular in France in the early 1900s when there was a trend for Chinoiserie.
I’m advised this is actually made from Fruitwood and is contemporary to that period.
It has what appears to be the original mirror plate, possibly mercury glass judging by the deep reflection of a coin placed on it, which is worn and scratched but has a nice patina and is still reflective.
Shabby but very sound it makes a great decorative piece of French Chinoiserie.
*
In good sound antique condition with wear, knocks and foxing to the glass - please examine photos carefully for condition.
This can be hung vertically or horizontally - there is a chain currently attached to the top intended to hang it vertically but it can also be hung horizontally - see photos.
Solid and sound with no structural damage but there is wear and staining - see photos.
The wood appears to have been varnished but is now worn, stained and aged but still reasonably rigid.
No noticeable woodworm.
To the rear is a wooden or plywood backing which is securely held in place.
The mirror appears to be original, and has wear and foxing but is secure and sound - see photos.
NOTE: there are a few scratches to the centre area of the glass, some of which appear to be to the silvering behind the glass and others to the glass surface - see photos.
I believe it to be mercury glass and it passes the coin reflection test - see photos.
The hanging chain is attached by one old screw and one staple and is securely enough to hang the mirror by - see photos.

Approximate dimensions:
49.5 cm tall by 43.5 cm wide point to point,
31.5 cm by 26 cm visible mirror plate,
about 3 cm thick (frame),
Weighs about 2 kg.
