Description

MG 1100 S 1968 30k - South African Import

Walk Around Video (undercarriage/engine running video on our YouTube channel)

This is rare chance to acquire a fantastic little classic which will no doubt be quite a talking point with the little 'S' badge on the back. Just 30k miles, a real possibly this is genuine considering the overall condition.

We have just spent 2 days recommissioned this little beauty having taken her in last year in part exchange for a rather lovely early MGB.

We have carried out all the usual recommissioning required:
the battery has replaced, the fuel pump has been stripped and rebuilt, the carbs cleaned and balanced, tappets adjusted and timing adjust to spot on!
The ignition parts changed, The brakes stripped and cleaned up then replaced (discs on front), brake fluid changed, coolant changed, hydrolastic fluid replaced and suspension system set to correct levels.
The car has been fully checked over and driven on a very enjoyable long drive to make sure all is well.

The car shall have a fresh MOT for the new owner (despite being MOT exempt of course)

The car does generally present extremely well, there are a few imperfections with the body, but these are very few and they could be addressed or left as is. The price point reflects this. The car is probably worth in the region of £15k, with some fairly minor improvements…an MG 1100S is impossibly rare and finding one that’s unwelded with a rock solid undercarriage and with just 30k miles is quite a challenge these days. So hopefully she will prove a good investment!

The interior of the car is very original and is in generally rather nice order, the carpets, door cards and head lining are especially good. The drivers seat is worn out on the base and ideally this would bd re-trimmed to return the seat to her former glory, but despite the wear, the seat itself is still comfortable (the previous owner fitted some seat supports which masks the worn drivers seat rather effectively)
The vinyl trim which covers the interior rear high level quarter panels is torn, these would ideally be repaired to make perfect.

The car has a rather nice chunky wooden sports steering wheel fitted and a matching gear knob, otherwise everything’s looks to be original. The wooden dashboard would benefit from refinishing as it’s looking rather tired currently, but it could also be left as is if so desired.

Having inspected the car on our hoist, I can truly say she is among the most solid ADO16’s we have offered, the undercarriage is rock-solid and there is no evidence of welding or indeed any need for welding. There is video on our Bradley James YouTube channel showing the undercarriage.

Being a car that was produced in Cape Town South Africa the lucky locals there got the 'S' version of the MG (called the 1100S). This one is a genuine ‘S' and therefore a rather rare car indeed. The colour scheme is simply beautiful and importantly being a car that's lived in a warm climate till 2017, the car is very sound and doesn't suffer the severe structural corrosion that UK cars often do.

The MG versions were the sporty car in the ADO16 range and they were only first available in South Africa towards the end of the 1960's, the 1300 GT replaced the MG version and you will probably be aware just how scarce and valuable those models are.

BTW - the car comes with her UK registration document stating the car was likely registered in January 1959...however historic information for BMC cars in South Africa is known to be poor and therefore be aware the date of actual registration is more likely to be late in 1968 or 1969 (the year the 'S' was introduced with a MK2 body to the SA market) - the car comes with the assigned number plate of 189 UYW, but it is non-transferrable (so please be aware you can't transfer this plate off the car).

Research shall no doubt help you find out some interesting facts about the SA version of the MG1100, there are some subtle differences that make the 'S' a rather unique variation of the beloved ADO16 range. This is a very rare car and even in South Africa itself you will find that numbers have greatly dwindled.
