Description
Here at RFH Classics we are incredibly proud to bring to the market this truly exceptional and almost unique 1966 MGB Roadster, a car that has led a life of care, restraint and remarkable unrivalled preservation and is quite possibly the most original example available today. This car has not been available to the market since 2015 when the first owner took the decision to vet any prospective buyer for a suitable home. Supplied new by University Motors of London W1 in May 1966, this MGB has had just two owners from new and has amazingly covered less than 50,000 miles in its lifetime. Accompanying the car in the next chapter of its ownership is the original purchase invoice which confirms the originality and shows the factory specified extras such as a heater, full tonneau cover and a workshop manual which still to this day accompanies the car today.
It is difficult to write in a car sales advert just what sets this MGB apart, it is not just the ownership history or mileage but more its incredible originality, something that is hard to describe. If you are looking for a shiny restored or rebuilt example then this car is not going to be one you will understand. This car is a preserved survivor, maintained with integrity and care by its first owner for 49 years and subsequently treasured and also maintained by its second custodian.
The bodywork wears its original MG factory applied 1966 cellulose paint that remains untouched by modern restoration methods. It carries the gentle patina of age with the swirls, light imperfections and character that only time can create and we have absolutely no intention of mopping or polishing away any of its authenticity. There is an old saying that something can only be original once and this car is a rare testament to that philosophy. It retains the factory correct pressed steel road wheel with chrome hubcaps, the original brightwork and has a cabin that is equally untouched by modern restoration processes. The Black leather seats show a gentle, age related patina that speaks of 59 years of careful use rather than wear, while the original rubber floor covering still lies in place. Aside from a required conversion of the cylinder head to accommodate modern unleaded fuel, the engine is exactly as it left the factory, which is a rare occurrence for any classic car, let alone one nearly 60 years old.
The history file for this car is nothing short of remarkable and includes wonderful items such as a bubble wrapped handwritten journal by the first owner, who meticulously recorded every journey, service and maintenance note during his near half-century of ownership. It is fact that when he took what would have been the difficult decision to part with the car, he turned away a number of dealers and people who expressed an interest in the advert he placed in MG Mart in 2015 and the successful buyer had to pass what could only be described as a character interview to be deemed worthy, something which we may well continue in tradition as only a certain few are going to understand just what this car is. Such is the status of this MGB that the MG Owners Club themselves visited the 2nd owner and wrote a feature about the car in which they themselves described it as 'probably the finest original MGB available' which when you see it in person, that description doesn't feel like an exaggeration but actually feels entirely deserved.
We must point out that this car may not be one for those seeking a gleaming restoration or a car with modern upgrades, its new custodian more likely being an enthusiast or collector who understands the immense value in honesty, provenance and near total originality. A car such as this is rarely seen and even less frequently offered for sale. Viewing is essential to genuinely appreciate what is on offer here and we welcome serious enquiries from interested parties who would be pleased to share in the cars continued journey.
