Description
This lot will be auctioned via Historics Classic and Sportscar Auctioneers at The Pace of Autumn; Ascot Racecourse sale on Saturday 20th September. Genuine UK supplied right hand drive example. A low mileage and thoroughly useable E-Type. Cherished number included in the sale. One consequence of the E-Types long process of development had been a gradual increase in weight, but a good measure of the concomitant loss of performance was restored in 1971 with the arrival of the sensational Series III V12. Weighing only 80lb more than the cast-iron-block 4.2 litre XK six that it replaced, the new all-alloy, 5.3 litre, overhead camshaft V12 engine produced 272bhp, an output good enough for a top speed well in excess of 140mph. Further good news was that the 0-100mph time of around 16 seconds made the V12 the fastest accelerating E-Type ever. Other mechanical changes beneath the Series IIIs more aggressive looking exterior included ventilated front disc brakes, anti-dive front suspension, Lucas transistorised ignition, and Adwest power-assisted steering, while automatic transmission was one of the more popular options on what was now more of a luxury Grand Tourer than out-and-out sportscar. Flared wheel arches, a deeper radiator air intake complete with grille and a four-pipe exhaust system distinguished the Series III from its six-cylinder forbears, plus, of course, that all important V12 boot badge. The interior though, remained traditional Jaguar. Built in two-seat roadster and 2+2 coupe versions, both of which used the long wheelbase floor pan introduced on the Series II 2+2, the Series III E-Type continued the Jaguar tradition of offering a level of performance and luxury unrivalled at the price.Originally registered on 26th September 1972, this E-Type has formed part of a private collection and has been very well cared for. The white coachwork presents very well as does the black leather interior. The standard chrome wheels are well shod with Pirelli P4000 being the tyre of choice. The 5343cc V12 engine runs well and the automatic gearbox operates as it should. This E-Type benefitted from an engine overhaul prior to lockdown, including the fitment of a new timing chain, tensioners and associated work. The invoice totalled just over £15,000 with invoices and photographic documentation. A Series III E-Type is a delightful car to drive, with good ergonomics, a responsive engine and the styling of one of Coventrys finest ever designs. Supplied with a V5 registration document and a current MoT test certificate valid until 24th June 2026 together with an extensive history file. We are informed the car is a sheer delight to drive and is faultless in every respect. An attractive purchase for a collector. Consigned by Stewart Banks
