Back in 2004, the world of fast family cars was dominated by German badges. The BMW 3-Series and Audi A4 were the default choice for those seeking pace and prestige, while Vauxhall was making noise with its brutish VXR offerings. Yet, quietly lurking in Ford showrooms was something rather special: the Mondeo ST220.

At first glance, you could mistake it for just another company rep’s car. But look closer and the differences start to appear — the subtle body kit, 18-inch alloys, and twin exhaust pipes give a hint that this isn’t an ordinary Mondeo. Slide into the driver’s seat and the message becomes clearer: leather-clad Recaros, brushed aluminium trim, and an ST badge on the wheel remind you that this is no ordinary commuter hack.

Under the bonnet lies Ford’s 3.0-litre Duratec V6, a naturally aspirated gem producing 223 bhp. Paired with a slick Getrag 6-speed manual gearbox, it sends power to the front wheels with a surprising lack of drama. 0–60 mph arrives in under seven seconds, and the ST220 will surge on to 150 mph if given the space, but it’s not just the numbers that impress — it’s the sound. The deep, growling exhaust note gives the Mondeo a muscular character, without ever becoming tiresome on long journeys.

This is a particularly good example, presenting well all a round and correctly maintained, running as it should and with the benefit of a long MOT to June 2026.
