By the mid-1980s, the hot hatch era was in full swing; Volkswagen had the Golf GTi, Peugeot had the 205 GTi, and Ford was keen not to be left behind. While the XR2 was the performance star of the Fiesta range, the 1986 Ford Fiesta 1.4S provided a more accessible but still spirited option for drivers who wanted a sporty edge without the insurance sting of the XR2.
The Fiesta Mk2, introduced in 1983, sharpened up the lines of the original Mk1, and the 1.4S built on this with subtle sporting cues such as discreet side stripes and model badging, sporty wheels, blacked-out trim details and a slightly lowered stance compared to the standard Fiesta.
Inside, the 1.4S offered bolstered sports seats, a sporty steering wheel and few extra features that made it feel a cut above the entry-level models.
Under the bonnet sat a 1,392cc CVH (Compound Valve Hemispherical) engine, producing around 75 bhp. While that may not sound like much today, the Fiesta weighed in at just under 800kg, making it a lively performer for it’s day, getting you to 60mph in 10.5 seconds with a top speed of 105 mph.
Praised for its nimble handling, light steering, and eager throttle response it offered all hallmarks of a proper driver’s car!
The 1.4S slotted neatly below the XR2, offering similar looks and fun factor at a more affordable price point. For younger drivers and enthusiasts on a budget, it became a popular choice and unlike the XR2, the 1.4S didn’t attract the same insurance premiums, making it more accessible while still delivering that super sporty drive.
Today, the Fiesta 1.4S is a rare sight, with the DVLA reporting just 2 left on the road from 1986. Many were driven hard, modified, or lost to rust — a common issue for Fords of the era. Survivors are now extremely desirable and sought after by collectors & enthusiasts who appreciate its balance of rarity, usability and fun representing an important chapter in Ford’s hot hatch story.
This wonderful example is in super original condition, and pleasingly retains the supplying dealer mud flaps all round, matching dealer plates and tax disc holder. The only exception to originality is an after market exhaust system and the vendor is including a brand new ‘original correct’ exhaust system in the sale; please note it will require a compatible front down pipe fitting prior to installation.
Recommissioned in 2023, including Pirelli P2000’s all round, it’s done very little mileage since and was subject to a full service in January 2025 including installation of a new cambelt and water pump. It also
To find an original, unmodified example is increasingly difficult and a low mileage and low owner car is nigh on impossible find. Given the growing interest in 1980s and 1990s performance cars, as well as the classic Ford phenomenon, we think this car ticks a lot of boxes either as a useable practical classic or one to tuck away in a collection.
