Description

ts a sad day as I'm selling my beloved and extremely rare Sequential Circuits Inc. Prophet 5 Rev 2.

The rev 2 used the earlier SSM chips that sound to my ears so much better than the later Curtis chips. The problem with the SSM chips (and probably why they went to the Curtis chips) and more generally the rev 2 was the tuning stability. This is why bands quite often used the rev 2 in the studio but the rev 3 on tour (Talking Heads, Japan etc). This problem has been resolved in the rev2 thanks to the masterly work of James at Synth Repair Services...there are now 8 little pixies running around inside making sure the tuning is just tickety-boo (well thats what James told me)
for the more technically minded, the power supply was upgraded (see toroidal photo), all presets replaced, and very high precision resistors used in DAC circuit. There is probably more to this mod but thats all I could work out from James Walker(Synth Repair Services).
I have been told that this was one of the earlier Prophet 5 rev 2's as it has a smooth panel surface, I have not been able to verify this. If anyone out there is more knowledgeable on the different rev2's it would be great if they could let me know if this is true or not.

this is what Vintage Synth Explorer says
"Rev 2 uses SSM chips, and has some differences in its control logic capabilities from the final version. It can't be retrofitted for MIDI, but is considered by most to be the better-sounding of the two 'common' P5s."
I think that was written before Kenton brought out the MIDI kit for the rev 2 as this has the Kenton MIDI and it works just great. (Please see photos of installed Kenton interface)

The Prophet was looked after and serviced by James at Synth Repair Services and is as fine (and useable) example of this fine analogue beast as you will find. Apologies to anyone who saw this advertised a few weeks ago but I thought for such an expensive synth it would be prudent for James Walker (Synth Repair Services) to check out and re-calibrate the synth ,
The cabinetry was taken back to the wood and then re-finished by a local cabinet maker. As with all modern restorations the idea is not to make it look "new" but make it as good as possible (both mechanically and aesthetically) without replacing anything i.e. keep it original.
Unfortunately the metal badges were badly damaged and had to be replaced.
Also for some reason the original serial no. was on a sticker and hasnt survived. I honestly dont know if it was lost during our restoration or before I took ownership.
Also includes original operating manual which is a collectors piece on its own.
