Cali is a 4-year-old Female Bull Lurcher (Greyhound x Bull Terrier), around 28kg. She is loving, affectionate, and completely trustworthy in the home — she has grown up with babies and toddlers and is unbelievably tolerant with them. She is house-trained, great in the car, can be left for periods (though she much prefers company), and has no destructive habits.
The photos dont do her justice, shes a good looking, well proportioned, athletic dog who gets a lot of compliments from passers by and also lots of love from people who visit our house.
Cali’s happiest times are out in nature — running free in woods and forests, exploring at full tilt. She has excellent recall to a whistle and thrives on adventure. She’s also joined us on camping trips and absolutely loves it: sleeping in the tent, relaxing on the campsite, and enjoying the outdoors. What she doesn’t cope well with are busy, high-stimulation environments like beaches or crowded parks — she becomes overexcited and can be difficult to manage, sometimes even running into people at full speed.
With other dogs, Cali has never fought but is a dominant character. She can get on very well with male dogs and has made good friends, but introductions need managing. Around unfamiliar dogs, I always put her on lead. She ignores most small dogs but is too rough for many playmates.
She will chase cats, squirrels, and deer, but is used to horses and cattle and has never chased sheep. She loves tug, scent games, and would likely excel at agility or canicross. She’ll happily run alongside you off-road abd off-leash for miles, and has even pulled me on a bike and skateboard. She is a VERY strong dog, stronger than she looks.
Training has been a big part of her journey. She had already been through multiple homes before she came to me at 6 months old, and it was only after following Joel Beckman’s (YouTube) balanced training approach that I saw real breakthroughs. She does not do well with “positive-only” methods — she escalates without interruption and needs calm, firm corrections to settle. With this approach, she has improved massively, become totally manageable, and shown how trainable and eager to please she really is.
Cali needs an experienced home with someone confident handling larger, high-drive dogs. She would suit an active individual or couple who enjoy long countryside walks, running, or outdoor adventures, ideally with another compatible male dog. I dont think being active is enough - she definitely needs handling
I'd prefer a gradual handover for her sake. Any potential owners will be carefully vetted — she is not a dog for a casual home. Realistically, I am unlikely to rehome her to a young single person unless they can demonstrate exceptional experience and commitment.
This is a very hard decision, but our family life with three young children simply isn’t compatible with her needs. In the right hands, Cali will be a loyal, loving, adventurous companion.
As long as she has had a good run she is very happy to curl up and spend the day with me in the office but she really needs 1.5 hours a day of off-leash which I just cant give her with 3 kids who also want my time when im not working. She is also very affectionate though tends to get overly excited when you stroke her - a happy medium is lying on the couch with you where she will happily spend hours if allowed.
She is not crate-trained but I am wondering if she might actually enjoy it if it had a cover over it
VIDEO: i added a video of me intentionally winding her up - I dont do this generally but wanted to demonstrate how easily she can be revved up - this is very normal 'bull lurcher' behavior - very loving but also a bit loopy - if you listen in the video you can hear the difference my tone makes to how she responds you can see that the excited voice just makes things worse or is ignored but when im a bit more serious she does her best to contain her energy - she genuinely wants to please. the second part of the video shows her getting out of the car as an example of how I handle her day to day - building these kind of protoclols for things like getting in/out of the car, going out the front door, playing tug etc. have worked wonders on her and I need to know that whoever takes her is willing to continue this approach (or similar) - without structure she would likely become unmanagable.
