Selling our collections (hoards) of mostly French vintage items that have been acquired over many years until finally we have no room for more!

Part of our collection of mid century planters, we got these from a brocante at Douai.
According to the seller they came from the clearance of a house in Bethune where they had been used as planters/window boxes since the 1960s.

An impressive and rare pair of matching Willy Guhl fibre cement concrete trough planters, window boxes, dating to the 1960s, that are now well aged but very sound.

Guhl was one of the first industrial designers in Switzerland and first made his mark by experimenting with new materials and creating relatively light pieces in simple yet elegant forms.
In 1951 Eternit commissioned Guhl to create a line of attractive and durable planters using fibre concrete or fibre cement which enabled numerous shaped designs.
These have no maker’s mark but are very distinctive in their mid century Beton Brut style and brief internet research reveals them to be probably produced under the BALCONIA line.
(We currently have a number of Willy Guhl planters listed from France).

In very good vintage condition, strong and sound, with wear consistent with age and use but no cracks or damage - please examine photographs carefully for condition.
Quite finely cast in a simple design with slightly raised “feet”.
Well aged with a nice patina and some lichen.
There are no cracks, there is no damage and I have found no significant chips but there are a couple of small chips to the edges, some scratches and rough edges - see photos
These are unpainted or very lightly painted and have some staining as well as lichen on the surfaces but would paint up well if preferred.
NOTE: these are currently in use in the garden and the patina/wear/staining may differ a little by the time they are sold.
There are drainage holes and also a hole to an upper side which I’m advised was to help secure it as a window box.
The interiors are worn but sound.
The base is in similar condition with the raised “feet” intact and sound.

Approximate dimensions:
79.5 cm long,
18 cm tall,
21 cm deep/wide,
1.5 cm wall thickness,
Planting space 76.5 cm by 18 cm, 16 cm deep,
Weigh about 9.3 kg each, 18.6 kg total.

NOTE: Due to size and fragility collection is preferred - these are located at Stapleford, Nottingham, NG97GY a mile or so from Junction 25 of the M1 Motorway.
However postage is available at the quoted shipping fee to standard mainland UK addresses.
NOTE: these may be shipped as two separate parcels.
