Description
Thomas Hughes: Tom Brown's School Days
The 1857 novel relates the experiences of young Tom at Rugby School and is largely based on the author's brother George Hughes. The author also attended the school.
The publishers, R.E. King & Co. Ltd, can date their history back to 1735 and was based in Lymington as a bookseller/printer but in 1890 brothers Charles and Richard King dissolved their partnership and Richard moved to Tabernacle Street in London and began publishing standard works of fiction, later grouped into collections with similar designs. He is reputed to have been the first publisher to see a cloth-bound book for a shilling. This particular book is undated but would appear to date from the end of the 19th or early 20th century. It is one of the Prize Library collection.
335 pages of text plus the lists of other works.
The book is undoubtedly showing its age and the spine is loose but still attached and could readily be re-glued. Otherwise it is in decent readable condition. There is no inscription or dedication.
