Description

‘Elementary Numerical Analysis’, Written by S.D.Conte

International Student Edition

An Algorithmic approach

This is a book on elementary numerical analysis geared specifically to the needs and background of students in engineering and science at the undergraduate level and is based on an undergraduate course taught at Purdue University. Except perhaps for the chapter on differential equations, the student who has had the basic college-calculus sequence should have no difficultly in following the material. It should be possible to cover most of the material in Chaps. 1 to 6 in a three-hour, one-semester course. Since this is a first course in numerical methods, no attempt has been made to give rigorous proofs of all theorems or to present a compendium of all commonly used methods. Proofs are given where basic principles are involved which fall within the area of cognizance of students at this level. Some algorithms are presented without proof, and heuristic methods are introduced when insight is thereby enhanced.
It is assumed that a computer is available to the student and that a large number of the algorithms presented will be programmed for the solution of problems. However, no attempt is made to teach programming. It is assumed that the student already knows how to write programs in a scientific-procedure-oriented language or that he is simultaneously learning to program in such a language. For many of the problems a flow chart, a machine programme, and actual machine results are presented. The language used in this text is FORTRAN IV, and the computer used is the ISM 7090. The emphasis throughout, however, is not on the program but on an analysis of the accuracy and efficiency of algorithms.
It is a pleasure to acknowledge the assistance of various member of the staff at Purdue University. In particular, I am indebted to Morris Bennett and Douglas Kerr for their assistance in writing and testing the FORTRAN programs and to Mrs. Cletis Smith for her diligence in typing the manuscript.
