Description

VINTAGE FRENCH YELLOW GLAZE TERRACOTTA JUG, CRUCHE, GARGOULETTE, CONFIT POT, VINEGAR OIL JAR, 29cm TALL - 1900s - REDUCED

WILL POST - I can post this for £7.99 if paid for by bank transfer (Note: we only accept payment in cash on collection or by bank transfer if delivery agreed - no PayPal, card, or courier payment).

Selling our collections (hoards) of mostly French vintage items that have been acquired over many years until finally we have no room for more!

We got this at a Brocante near Troyes, Champagne, and have used it as a decorative display but it apparently originates from Drome region of Provence.
A relatively recent antique, I’m advised this can be identified as dating to the early 20th century from its two handles, gargoulette spout, irregular shape, thick glaze, and hand thrown terracotta construction.
Terracotta drip glazed in yellow, still with its lid, its intended use was probably to store oil, vinegar, or even duck fat.
It is a great decorative rustic antique in very good condition for its age with both the handles and spout present and undamaged - usually one or all have been broken over the years!

In good, sound, vintage/antique, condition with wear, small chips and staining but no cracks or damage - please examine photographs carefully for condition.
The surfaces are drip glazed in yellow to the upper half.
They are attractively irregular with bumps and dents - see photos.
There is some wear, some small chips, which I’ve tried to photograph, and a few firing imperfections giving the whole an attractive rustic patina - see photos.
There is also some light staining - see photos.
The spout and handles are present and in good sound condition which is unusual for a jug of this age.
The lid is worn but intact and fits loosely.
The bottom has wear from use but is sound.
The interior is fully glazed and a little worn and stained sound.
I have filled this with water and it appears to be watertight.
I can find no maker’s mark.

Measures approximately:
29 cm tall,
21 cm long handle to spout,
17 cm diameter at it’s widest,
10 cm diameter at the base,
weighs about 2 kg.
