Description

The Columbia Disc Graphophone

The inscription reads:

"The Columbia Disc Graphophone
Made in U.S.A.
Patented May 4 1886 Dec 27 1887 April 3 1888 June 10 1890 Oct 15 1894 March 20 1897 July 27 1897 April 21 1903
Columbia Phonographic Co.
New York & London"

I've owned this for 20 years and it's sat proudly in my living room as a beautiful aesthetic piece. It was sold as working, but I've never tested or verified this.

From research, this is the Columbia BH model.

The body of the gramophone is made of wood and weighs approximately 6.5kg. The size of the body is 30 cm long x 30 cm wide x 11cm high. The horn is detachable and made of metal, weighing approximately 1 kg.

The whole gramophone weighs approximately 7.5kg, is 60cm long, 52cm across, and 55cm high

Both the body and the horn feature historic marks and dents.

And a bit of research into the brand: The Columbia Phonographic Co (1856-1915) was the beginning of what eventually became Columbia Records, through a few other company names in the meantime. It’s too long to mention here but a search for “Columbia Records” on Wikipedia and reading “the beginning” will show the journey.

A true piece of music history.
