Description

Extreme rarity Charles I (1625‑49), ‘Fine work’ Nicholas Briot specimen gold Unite of twenty shillings, Tower mint, initial mark plume (1630‑31), Group C, class IIa, bust 3a, wire line inner circle within beaded circle both sides, crowned draped bust left, wearing ruff, value XX behind, legend surrounds CAROLVS DG MAG BRIT FR ET HIB REX. Rev, crowned oval quartered coat of arms, pellets in field, crowned, C‑R flanking either side, six strings to Irish harp, reads FLORENT CONCORDIA REGNA, raised die flaw after legend before plume, 8.95g (S.2690; N.2150; cf. SCBI 33 [Brooker], 68; cf. Schneider 137; cf. Slaney Part II, lot 302). Particularly well struck, set out on a fully symmetrical and round flan with an almost matt gold tone, legend lettering precise, portrait and bust with an impressive level of detail. Rev, well struck, little softness. Near extremely fine, extremely rare. Pleasing.

One of just a few known 'fine works' issue Unites. Nearly extremely fine grade. From an exceptional pedigree and one of the most beautiful coins I have to date handled.

*Note: from the recent Spink December 2022 "St Albans Collection" one of the other known "Fine Works" mm Plume issue unites sold for £32000 (£39,680 inc. the 20% buyers premium plus vat) Photo added, click on photo to show details.

Another Nicholas Briot issue selling in 2012 for £36,000 plus fees (£44,640) as per screen shot.

This coin isn't your usual gold unite, please research Nicholas Briot 'fine work' coins.

Provenance: Baldwin's of London.

Bargain at £25,995, I'm in no rush to sell. Price will rise accordingly, so silly offers completely ignored. Price will rise in January 2024 if I still have it.

Concrete investment, prices will only go north.

I have visited Spink of London personally and they're keen to add this coin in their sale with a 25k reserve.

Personal delivery available, possibly same day. I have delivered three of my coins to the South Coast in the past month, all happy with their purchases.

Part exchange welcome, what have you got?

I have other extremely rare gold coins available, see my other adverts including a unique never seen before die Henry VIII one gold sovereign and a 1692 William and Mary gold Five Guinea.
