Description
A Type 1 'In Statu Quo' Chess Set, patented 1853
Bone pieces with brass pins, white and stained red (staining variously faded)
The pieces lock in place by pressing small buttons to engage a brass plate below the board. Other buttons free them for play.
The original leather case would have had a space for storing captured pieces,
but this has been replaced by a fabric-coated card case, as shown. A small leatherette pouch can be used for the same purpose
