ANTIQUE FRENCH ZINC BOTTLE DRYER, GALVANISED STEEL HERISSON WINE BOTTLE RACK DRAINER, 91 BOTTLE, PAN RACK, WINE RACK, GARDEN FEATURE, 105cm tall diam 6kg - 1920s CHAMPAGNE - REDUCED!

WILL POST - Dimensions rather than weight make shipping on this expensive I’m afraid as it falls into a large parcel category - Collection is most welcome, in fact preferred. This item is located at NG97GY.

Selling our collections (hoards) of mostly French vintage items that have been acquired over many years until finally we have no room for more!

We got this at a vide maison near Reims, Champagne, and have most recently been using it as a pan rack with butchers hooks but we have also used it variously as a wine rack and garden feature/climber trellis.
However, this is known in French as a Herisson (Hedgehog) and would have originally been used as a bottle dryer during the bottling of champagne or wine.
Marked with a maker’s mark that I read as SGDG O.N PARIS, I’m advised it dates the 1920s.
This is unusual in that it has loops to allow inverted bottles to drain whereas they more commonly have spikes, hence the name Hedgehog.
This is a great advantage in that it can now be used as a wine rack for full bottles - up to 91 of them if my counting is correct!
They can also be used as pan racks, glass racks, cup racks, photograph displays, garden features or even Christmas trees…

Now worn and a little misshapen it is nevertheless in good sound condition with wear consistent with its age and use - please examine photos carefully for condition.
Quite imposing yet not too unwieldy it stands well but rocks a little.
The surfaces have marks, dents, areas of rust and wear but are all very sound - see photos
Just a little rust but no serious corrosion or through perforation - see photos.
All loops are present and secure and at the last count it has about 91.
