Description

ANTIQUE FRENCH GLASS SHEPHERD’S FEEDING BOTTLE, BIBERON DE BERGER, BLOWN GLASS, 24 cm tall - 1800s PROVENCE - REDUCED!

WILL POST - I can post this for £7 if paid for by bank transfer. (Note - we only accept payment in cash on collection or by bank transfer if delivery agreed - no PayPal, card, or courier payment).

Acquired from an antiquaire in Chatillon sur Seine, Burgundy, this glass shepherd’s feeding bottle, or biberon de berger, apparently originates from Provence.

A genuine hand blown glass antique, I’m advised it dates to the early 1800s, possibly the late 1700s.

These were used to by shepherds or goat herders in the field to feed young animals (lambs or kids) that may have been in distress or rejected.

Originally it would have been encased in a protective wicker or rush carrying case which has long gone but done it’s job well judging by the excellent condition of the bottle.

It has fine glass with attractive bubbles and ridges from blowing, a visible pontil mark to the base, and wear from use but no damage, chips or cracks.

Quirkily misshapen, it makes a beautiful decorative antique.

This is very well priced when compared to the few others either for sale or sold and due to it’s fragile nature becoming increasingly rare…

In very good antique condition with some wear and staining but no damage, cracks, or chips - please examine photographs carefully for condition.

When acquired this was dirty and has since been washed resulting in clean glass with just a little limescale residue and staining - see photos.
There are no cracks or chips but there is wear and very light scratching which I’ve tried to photograph, anything that looks like a crack is probably a glass ridge, bubble or due to photography.
The whole is in good sound condition.
The glass has a greenish tinge and is clean and clear when held up to the light with attractive bubbles and blowing ridge imperfections visible.
There is some staining and what I think is limescale to the interior - see photos.
Stands in a slightly misshapen manner.
The neck is intact with no chips.
The base is concave with a roughly cut pontil mark.
I can find no maker’s mark.

Measures approximately:
24 cm tall,
14 cm long,
11 cm wide,
weighs about 450 g.

The wine bottle is to show scale and not included!
