ANTIQUE FRENCH RELIGIOUS PLASTER BUST OF A BISHOP, CHALKWARE SCULPTURE, DEATH MASK STYLE STATUE, H25cm W15cm - 1900s - REDUCED!

Selling our collections (hoards) of mostly French vintage items that have been acquired over many years until finally we have no room for more!

We got this a while ago from an antique dealer in Chatillon sur Seine in the Burgundy region and have used it as a decorative display.

It’s an early 1900s hanging religious plaster sculpture or bust of a bishop or other religious, probably Papal, figure.

Death mask in style it depicts a person’s head wearing a bishop’s mitre or hat and two hands holding it either side - really quite atmospheric.

I know nothing about the subject despite internet research.

Soundly made from roughly painted plaster or chalkware, it’s now worn with some scratches and chips but a nice patina, it’s still very sound and makes a great gothic decorative piece…

In good vintage condition with wear, chips and staining consistent with its age and use - please examine photographs carefully for condition.

The bust is thick and sound but has areas of wear, mostly chips to the paint rather than chips into the plaster, although there are those as well - see photos.
No cracks.
Well cast with a lot of intricate detail.
Quite roughly painted in a black or dark grey paint.
The painted surfaces are stable and sound but with some chips, paint loss, and scratches down to bare plaster or chalk - see photos.
Hollow to the rear and showing bare plaster.
Has a hanging loop.
I can find no maker’s mark.

Measures approximately:
25 cm tall, 15 cm long, 10 cm deep,
Weighs about 800g.
