Description

ANTIQUE FRENCH ÉMAUX DE LONGWY POTTERY STORAGE JARS SET, SIX CANISTERS - FARINE SUCRE CAFÉ THÉ POIVRE ÉPICES - CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL GLAZE - RARE 1920s ART DECO KITCHENALIA

REDUCED!

WILL POST - I can post this for £7.99 if paid for by bank transfer. (Note - we only accept payment in cash on collection or by bank transfer if delivery agreed - no PayPal, card, or courier payment).

Acquired from a Brocante in Chalons en Champagne this this is a set of six antique graduated ceramic storage jars by the famous Emaux de Longwy, France.

Clearly marked: FARINE SUCRE CAFÉ THÉ POIVRE ÉPICES (FLOUR SUGAR COFFEE TEA PEPPER SPICES) with a vivid art deco design and maker’s marks to the bottom of each, these date to the 1920s (internet research show that the style of maker’s mark identifies them as produced between 1890 to 1948).

The Longwy pottery or Faïencerie de Longwy was founded in 1798 in a former convent and in the 1870s, at the height of the Orientalist era, to counter growing imports they developed a cloisonné type glaze taking as their model the metallic enamels found in China and Japan.

Since then Longwy has held the exclusive right to produce cloisonné enamels on earthenware.

Now worn but still very sound with thick glaze they make great useful pieces of decorative french kitchenalia and are apparently rare and collectable antiques.

In very good antique condition with wear, crazing, and a small chip to the underside edge of one lid - please examine photographs carefully for condition.

In as found condition having just had a wash.

The surfaces are bright, thick and sound but worn from use - see photos.

There is some age and use related crazing, wear and staining but all surfaces are stable - see photos.

Although there is wear I can only find one significant chip to the underside edge of the Sucre jar, not visible unless upturned - see photos.

The lids all fit and all handles are sound with no cracks or repairs (which is unusual).

The bases are worn but sound.

Marked to the bottom of each with a crest and LONGWY FRANCE M.
