LARGE ANTIQUE FRENCH CONFIT JAR, STONEWARE CONFIT POT, SALTING JAR, STORAGE JAR, VASE, PLANTER, H30cm L24cm Diameter 20cm - 1700s FRENCH KITCHENALIA

WILL POST - I can post this for £7.99 if paid for by bank transfer. (Note - we only accept payment in cash on collection or by bank transfer if delivery agreed - no PayPal, card, or courier payment).

Acquired from a brocante in Pougy, Champagne, this antique confit pot or salting jar apparently came from a local farm.

Hand thrown and dating to the late 18th century, it’s a great decorative rustic antique in good condition for it’s age.

It was probably used as a confit pot for preserving duck in duck fat but they were also used as salting jars to cure or preserve foods in salt.

Now worn and missing it’s lid but with both handles intact, it is functional as intended or has a number of modern day uses such as a vase, planter, kitchen utensils jar, or just a statement piece of French kitchenalia…

In good, sound, antique condition with wear, chips and staining consistent with age and use - please examine photographs carefully for condition.

The photos best show the condition of this.
It was in dusty condition when acquired and has just been washed.
Stands well if a little crookedly.
The exterior surfaces are mostly unglazed but the interior is glazed.
They are hand thrown and attractively irregular with bumps and dents - see photos.
No cracks or damage but there are numerous chips, mostly to the top edges - see photos.
There is wear and a few firing imperfections giving the whole an attractive rustic patina - see photos.
The handles are present and in good sound condition which is unusual for a jug of this age.
They are easily strong enough to lift the jar even when filled.
The bottom has wear from use but is sound.
I have filled this with water and it appears to be watertight.
I can find no maker’s mark.
Measures approximately:
30cm tall,
24 cm long handle to handle,
Slightly elliptical in shape but about 20 cm diameter at it’s widest,
weighs about 1.8 kg.

The wine bottle is to show scale and not included!
