Description

An exquisite, 19th century, hard bound blank vellum rent collection book.
The spine is titled “1864 Rents M?E Gerkie”.
The book has 215 pages, comprising of 2 front pages and 1 back edge page, lined numbered pages from 16-179, and 47 unnumbered lined pages.
All of the page edges are marbled.
On the inner sleeve is a glued insert which says “The paper in this antique vellum-bound account book bears the watermark
SNELLGROVE with the figure of Britannia and the date 1831”
The book measures 8 inches tall x 6.5 inches wide by 1.5 inches thick.
The vellum overall is in good condition, the front and back boards are solid and the bindings are all firm.
Every page is watermarked but it’s actually for SNELGROVE and not SNELLGROVE, and was used by the company of “Golding Snelgrove”. The family of paper makers leased mills at Dulcote, Wookey Hole and Bleadney.
The Gerkie family name can be found in the USA, Canada, Scotland and Poland, especially between 1851 and 1920. The most Gerkie families were found in USA in 1880. In 1880 there were several Gerkie families living in Indiana.
Cash on collection at Poole.
