Company: Hooper & Co International Trade Consultancy
Location: Nuneaton, Warwickshire
Salary: £26,500 starting, progression to £30,000+ after 1 year plus performance bonus
Job Type: Permanent, Full-time, Graduate/Trainee
About Us:
Specialist customs consultancy with 20+ years expertise, partnered with local Chambers of Commerce. We advise businesses from SMEs to multinationals on international trade compliance, working directly with HMRC and Department for Business & Trade. Our expert team offers unparalleled mentorship and rapid career progression.
The Opportunity:
Transform from graduate to customs consultant in just 12 months. This isn’t a typical graduate scheme - it’s an intensive development programme combining hands-on customs operations with strategic consultancy. You’ll gain first-hand experience of real customs challenges through our sister freight forwarding and customs clearance company, alongside high-level consultancy work. This dual exposure provides expertise that typically takes 3+ years elsewhere.
Key Responsibilities:
• Process customs declarations and master CDS/SPIRE systems
• Learn classification (HS codes) and customs valuation
• Support client compliance audits and strategic reviews
• Assist developing training materials for major clients
• Handle client consultations with senior support
• Travel to client sites across UK (after 6 months)
• Progress from operational work to consultancy projects
• Gain exposure to international trade regulations and compliance
What You’ll Learn:
• Complete customs procedures and compliance
• International freight and Incoterms
• Client consultancy and audit techniques
• Training delivery and presentation skills
• Direct mentorship from ex-HMRC specialists
• Real-world customs problem-solving through our freight operations
Essential Requirements:
• Degree qualified (any discipline, 2:1 or above)
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Excellent communication abilities
• Genuine interest in international business/trade
• Full UK driving licence
• Right to work in UK (no sponsorship available)
• Available September 2025 start
Desirable:
• Business, Economics, Law or International Relations degree
• Strong data analysis skills
• Advanced Excel skills
• Customer service experience
• Interest in global supply chains
Package & Benefits:
• £26,500 starting salary
• Progression to £30,000+ after 1 year plus performance bonus
• Clear pathway: Analyst → Junior Consultant → Consultant
• Professional qualification support
• Direct client exposure from day one
• Mentorship from industry experts
• Unique learning environment across both consultancy and operations
Important Note:
First 6 months are office-based 5 days/week in Nuneaton for intensive training. This hands-on immersion is essential for rapid skill development. Flexibility increases after foundation period.
Why Join Us?
Unlike 2-3 year graduate schemes at large firms, we offer:
• Direct access to senior leadership daily
• Real responsibility within months, not years
• Diverse client exposure across industries
• Faster progression (consultant level in 2 years vs 5+ elsewhere)
• Your development directly impacts our success
To Apply:
Please send CV and cover letter explaining:
1. Why customs/international trade interests you
