Get ready to be inspired…

Earlier this year we set out to find brilliant businesses who had shone during the pandemic and were blown away by the entries to our Small Business Blast Off Competition.

Based on criteria including innovation, agility and community spirit, our judging panels had a tough job on their hands, but we can now share our final line up of wonderful winners.

Get ready to be inspired by how some amazing businesses turned adversity into breath-taking positivity!

A big shout out and thank you to all the businesses that entered and made this competition such a success.

Congratulations to our winner of £10,000 + Gumtree and partner business blast-off packages/prizes

1st Place Winner

Flora Fauna Folk

When Maddie lost her full-time job during the first lockdown, she saw it as a sign to start working towards her big ambitions.

Flora Fauna Folk was officially launched in November 2020 as an illustration, permaculture and design service focusing on earth care, people care and fair care.

Maddie has been adapting her business ever since, selling her stunning creative work, inspiring people to go outside and connect with nature and providing resources to parents, teachers and other permaculture designers.

We’ll leave it to Maddie’s stunning video entry to tell you the rest.

Congratulations to our joint runner up and the winner of £5,000 + Gumtree and partner business blast-off packages/prizes

Joint 2nd Place Winner

Messy Nessy

Ian and Fiona run their Messy Nessy activity centre in Thurso, right at the top of Scotland providing hands-on activities like arts & crafts, pottery & glass fusing to the local community.

When COVID came it hit this rural district hard where isolation is already an issue. Undeterred, Ian & Fiona adapted their business to sell group activity takeaway kits and offered instructions over video calls. Every Monday they offered free interactive storytelling for families and even ran a COVID-safe treasure hunt to raise money to offer activity kits to nursing homes, and vulnerable and isolated people.

If that wasn’t enough, they took a risk and bought a supply of bell tents and igloos, for people to hire so they could meet safely outside and even fall asleep under the stars.

Joint 2nd Place Winner

Mirka Bridal Couture

As a small business, last year was tough for this bridal boutique. Mirka, an award-winning designer and dressmaker, had to make many adjustments to day-to-day operations.

Not only did she adapt her own business to survive, Mirka of Mirka Bridal Couture also helped to lead the national effort to make scrubs for NHS workers. With her daughter Maja on board, a Facebook group called ‘NHS Scotland For the love of scrubs’ helped recruit 400 volunteers who came together to create 15,000 sets of scrubs which were sent out to hospitals all over Scotland.

This giving business also helped provide patterned and colourful face masks for children and their parents on the oncology ward at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh.
