Read on for our summary of everyday things you’ll need that you may not have thought of. Time to start practising taking notes by making a uni checklist.
High-tech and old-school stationery
Top of the list is a laptop for researching and writing essays. It can also double up as a TV when you’re between seminars. If you’re buying a new one, it’s a good idea to consider its weight. You’ll likely end up carrying it around a lot of the time, so a lighter model could save backache.

If you already have a laptop, an external hard drive is a quick and easy way to boost its storage space. Other techy bits to pack are USB memory sticks (always handy) and an ethernet cable, just in case your flat’s WiFi isn’t great. While you might prefer to type up notes during lectures, it’s probably worth taking a notepad and pen with you too. Batteries and chargers can give out, after all. Other stationery bits to stock up on include sticky notes, highlighters, paper clips and folders to keep printed work organised, as well as a weekly planner. Get settled in
A lot of rooms are furnished with just the bare essentials, so it’s a good idea to take some accessories with you to make the space cosier. You’ll need to take your own mattress protector, duvet, pillows and sheets. All of which happen to be easy ways to add pattern and colour to your space. Other soft furnishings like small rugs and blankets will add texture, while tossing some cushions on your bed can make it into a comfy lounging area. Practical things can be decorative too, and they make your room feel more personal. You might add a desk lamp with softer lighting for studying, or an aesthetic laundry basket to hide dirty washing.

Cook a feast or make a cuppa
Whether you’re house-sharing or moving into self-catered halls, it’s likely that you’ll have a communal kitchen area. Check what’s already there. It could save you packing a kettle and toaster – but it’s likely that you’ll need pots and pans, crockery, cutlery, glasses and mugs. It’s a good idea to take smaller bits with you too, such as Tupperware containers, chopping boards and utensils like wooden spoons and bottle openers (a must-have!). Don’t forget cleaning bits too, such as dishcloths, tea towels and bin bags.

Clothes and costumes
You’ve surely already picked and packed the all-round staples like pyjamas and everyday clothes, but remember you’ll be sharing living space – and more importantly a bathroom – with others. So while you may be used to walking around barefoot at home, sliders or flip flops come in handy in student accommodation where floors aren’t always spick and span. If you get waterproof ones made of rubber, foam or plastic, they can double as ‘shower shoes’ (you’ll thank us later).
And then there’s the fun stuff for special occasions like formals, themed nights out and fancy dress parties. You might not know which of these events will be on, so you can save yourself packing smart clothes and/or costumes by shopping for some Good Finds on Gumtree as and when you need.

Bits and bobs
While these aren’t top of the list of what to take to uni, they’ll certainly make your life a little easier once you’re there. A little sewing kit can rectify last-minute wardrobe malfunctions, and laundry days will be a lot easier if you’ve got your own detergent and fold-away clothes airer. Coat hangers are also good for this, and they’re a must-have for storing clothes in wardrobes.
From clothes to crockery to portable hard drives, our uni checklist takes a look at all the essentials you’ll need for your first year. Pack your bags with Good Finds from Gumtree, like barely-used tableware for evenings in to fancy dress costumes for nights out.
