Volvo XC40
The Volvo XC40 is a premium compact SUV that really gives the competition a run for its money. It has a striking design, comfort, practicality, up-to-date features and sterling safety credentials. On the latter point, it has a five-star Euro NCAP rating that includes a 97% score for adult occupants. To drive, it feels solid and reliable – it may not fully be a ‘driver’s car’ but it’s no slouch either. Petrol engine choices span efficiency and performance, and there are now hybrid and all-electric versions too. Diesel is no longer an option new but is available as a used buy.
