Jaguar I-PACE Review

Gumtree Rating

4.5 rating

Jaguar spent billions of pounds and plenty of time for their first-ever electric, and it was well worth the wait. Standing tall against rivals Audi e-Tron, Mercedes EQC and Tesla Model X, the I-PACE is a gamechanger for the nascent luxury electric SUV market. A result of the car’s long R&D phase was the development of Jaguar’s ‘skateboard’ architecture – something that will form the base for all upcoming Jaguar electrics. Impressive looks, uncompromised technology and keen attention to practicality make the Jaguar I-PACE the new benchmark in the segment.

The I-PACE entered the market in March 2019. The all-electric SUV utilises a four-wheel-drive system powered by a 396 brake horsepower engine. It’s made available in three trims, along with optional driver assistance packages to personalise the car to your needs.

Driving performance of the Jaguar I Pace

Our Driving Rating9 / 10

For a 2.2-tonne SUV, the I-PACE is remarkably agile. Powerful motors propel the car effortlessly, and the precise steering combined with excellent weight dynamics make it a breeze to take on corners. The weight detracts from its ability to handle an abrupt encounter with potholes, but the suspension does a fine job at smoothening out the ups and downs. Rock-solid body control and exceptional traction control make the I-PACE an absolute pleasure to drive in comparison with rivals.

Safety and reliability of the Jaguar I Pace

Our Safety Rating9 / 10

Euro NCAP has awarded a full five-star rating for the Jaguar I-PACE. It should also be noted that electric cars are generally more reliable as they have fewer moving parts. Plus, Jaguar ranks well in terms of reliability, and customer satisfaction has always been a strong point. Standard safety tech include autonomous emergency braking, which preps the brakes of the car in case of a potential collision, as well as a driver-condition monitor which warns drivers of drowsiness. You can also opt for the driver assistance pack with more safety features like Blind Spot Assist, which helps drivers during lane changes.

Under the bonnet of the Jaguar I Pace

Our Engine Rating9 / 10

Currently, the I-PACE is only available as one model – the EV400. The car is powered by two electric motors with a combined bhp of 396. In terms of performance, this Jag is an absolute thrill ride, conquering 0 to 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds. Its top speed is 124 mph, which is certainly comparable to its rivals. The convenience of one-pedal driving for city roads and the grace with which the I-PACE takes on motorways make it a top performer that’s politely powerful.

What you'll find in the Jaguar I Pace

Our Design Rating9 / 10

The work of veteran British designer Ian Callum, the I-PACE is a fantastic looking beast. The production car keeps most of the elements from the concept version, making it one of the most futuristic models in the market. Small overhangs, a signature grille and sharply contoured lights make for a muscular stance on the road. Although it’s a bold design move, it’s got all the hallmark features of a Jaguar, which is important for the premium price tag.

Comfort and interiors in the Jaguar I Pace

Our Comfort Rating9 / 10

The fantastic looks on the outside carry over very cleanly for the interiors too. The lack of a conventional engine means there’s plenty of cabin space with lots of legroom. Thin A-pillars and large windows make for an airy cabin with a decluttered layout. Handily, the I-PACE gets 656-litres of boot space, which is the best in class. With the rear seats folded, you get an additional 779-litres, making for a comfy journey for a road trip for two. A plush feel along with lots of cubby holes means this Jaguar checks all the boxes for luxury travel.

What features you'll find in the Jaguar I Pace

Our Features Rating8 / 10

Entry-level models get 18-inch alloys, LED headlights and synthetic leather seats. Upgrade to top-tier specs for Ebony Windsor leather sport seats, larger alloys and matrix LED headlights. For in-car infotainment, the I-PACE comes with a 12.3-inch driver-side display and a 10-inch screen on the dash. Jaguar’s Pivi Pro system offers real-time traffic updates, live charging ports as well as parking and place information. You can also connect to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The ride is nice and quiet all the way through, with very little wind and tyre noise even at high speeds.

What fuel efficiency to expect from the Jaguar I Pace

Our Fuel Consumption Rating9 / 10

The I-PACE is powered by a 90 kWh lithium-ion battery which takes 12 hours to top-up with a 7 kW charger. 40 minutes of charge from a 100 kW charger will give you range of 240 miles. A nifty trick that the I-PACE uses to keep the miles coming is regenerative braking, which slows down and eventually stops the car as soon as you lift off the throttle, recharging the battery as it does so. Although it’s become easier to find rapid and ultra-rapid chargers in recent years, having a wallbox at home is a necessity – charging with a standard three-pin socket will take up to 27 hours.

Running costs of the Jaguar I Pace

Our Cost Rating8 / 10

The I-PACE is undoubtedly a luxury indulgence – with its premium badge, it’s not road tax exempt. While the entry-level model falls in Insurance Group 49, the other two trims are grouped at 50, meaning insurance is expensive too. Of course, its electricity costs are no problem in comparison to the fuel costs petrol or diesel models, especially if you use the free charging points at public places. Jaguar’s three-year/unlimited mileage warranty and comprehensive eight-year/100,000-mile warranty for the battery is industry standard. Expect to pay a premium for servicing once a year, but otherwise, there shouldn’t be extra expenditure.
