What we think about the BMW 4 Series

This is one of the best coupes on the UK market, with class-leading features and thrilling performance. The 4 Series adds a whole new dimension to BMW’s range.

Pros

+

Diverse range of progressive powertrains

+

High-end technology options available

+

Refined and spacious interior

Cons

Suspension is too firm in places

The second generation is fresh onto the market in 2021, so don’t be surprised to see its UK sales figures continue to exceed expectations. There are a total of four trims available – 430i, 430i xDrive, 440i, and 440i xDrive. It’s even got a meaner presence now that it’s 128mm longer and 27mm wider than before.

Driving performance of the Bmw 4 Series

Our Driving Rating9 / 10

One thing the BMW badge has managed to do is blend sophistication with genuine fun behind the wheel. Its lower centre of gravity and wider wheels mean the 4 Series is more than comfortable handling its powerful engine through corners. The suspension is a little stiff, but this is only a minor problem thanks to its new automatic transmission, which is smoother than the manual transmission on previous models – so the drive will still feel smooth and exciting. The near-perfect weight distribution is an engineering masterclass, and despite a lower-seated driving position you still feel in total control of the car.

Safety and reliability of the Bmw 4 Series

Our Safety Rating8 / 10

This rating might seem a little harsh, but without a crash-test rating from Euro NCAP we can’t make any promises. However, the 3 Series received a five-star crash-test rating and a 97% occupant safety rating. Additionally, BMW’s own reputation for being a leader in safety technology and its latest string of optional accessories will look after you on the road. As standard, the 4 Series is equipped with autonomous emergency braking (for if it recognises an upcoming collision), a reversing camera and rear cross-traffic alert.

Under the bonnet of the Bmw 4 Series

Our Engine Rating8 / 10

Despite shifting toward a more technological focus, this latest 4 Series still delivers dynamic powertrains that generate plenty of horsepower and surpass its previous top speed. Both the entry-level and mid-tier 4 Series trims benefit from BMW’s 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine – the 420i produces 180 bhp, while the 430i steps up a notch generating 254 bhp. The M440i was the flagship model at launch – and with a 3.0-litre turbo-petrol engine packing 382 bhp that glides past 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds, it’s easy to see why. Eight-speed automatic transmission comes as standard across the range.

What you'll find in the Bmw 4 Series

Our Design Rating10 / 10

The new 4 Series drives superbly, and its appearance doesn’t disappoint either. Coupes are sometimes perceived as being a little soft around the edges, but not this one. This second generation returns with a meaner grille beneath its bonnet, dominating the front-end, while two glaring LED headlights caress either side. The sloping roofline draws your eye along the length of the car. While the front may look mean, the rear is sleek and premium in appearance – wraparound tail-lights and a large exhaust combine to give the 4 Series a sophisticated yet sporty look.

Comfort and interiors in the Bmw 4 Series

Our Comfort Rating8 / 10

Its stylish and eye-catching exterior really builds up expectations for its interior, but let’s be clear: the 4 Series is a coupe, so don’t expect extravagant legroom outside of the front cabin. Though there is plenty of space for driver and passenger to sit back and enjoy its luxurious leather seating. Your driving position might feel a little lower than usual, but the seating is highly adjustable – so take the time to find your happy place. Its rear cabin is spacious for a coupe, and you’ll even find up to 440 litres of boot space.

What features you'll find in the Bmw 4 Series

Our Features Rating9 / 10

Once inside, you’ll spend a lot of time playing with BMW’s class-leading range of technology. Standard car keys are obsolete, now replaced by a push-button start. It also includes a 12.3-inch infotainment system as standard, complemented by a 10-speaker sound system. But it’s the inclusion of an M Sport package that elevates it above many rivals. Apple CarPlay and, finally, Android Auto are available – both connectable via Bluetooth and with the perk of wireless smartphone charging. The optional spec sheet is generous, so take the time to see how you’d like to personalise your 4 Series.

What fuel efficiency to expect from the Bmw 4 Series

Our Fuel Consumption Rating8 / 10

BMW has always prided itself on providing excellent fuel economy within its range, and the 4 Series does it proud. There certainly are thirstier coupes on the market, but in this case, it will depend on the trim you choose. Its entry-trim, the 420i, will offer 36.7 mpg, while the 430i manages slightly lower delivering 35.6 mpg – but there’s very little in the difference. The flagship model, the M440i, is certainly a heavier and more potent machine. It will only deliver 30 mpg, and if you’re being realistic that’s probably on a good day.

Running costs of the Bmw 4 Series

Our Cost Rating8 / 10

The biggest question you need to ask yourself here is how often will you be driving? This sounds like an obvious point, but certain 4 Series trims will offer you added tax relief benefits depending on your mileage. However, if you don’t make that cut, you might be better off shaving a few thousand pounds off the asking price by picking a mid-trim model. The 4 Series falls into insurance groups 30-40 and comes with a three-year unlimited warranty as standard, with a general service recommended every twelve months.
