When buying used furniture, thoroughly inspect it for signs of wear and tear, such as scratches, dents, or stains. Check the stability of the piece and ensure all drawers and doors function correctly. Enquire about its history, including any previous repairs or treatments. Be mindful of potential allergens if the furniture is upholstered, and consider professional cleaning before use.
When purchasing electronics, always test the item before buying, if possible. Check for valid safety certifications (e.g., CE marking) and ensure the device is in good working order. Ask about the item's age and usage history. Be wary of deals that seem too good to be true, as they may indicate stolen or faulty goods. Meet in a public place and avoid sharing personal information.
When buying a used car, conduct a thorough inspection, including checking the engine, tyres, and bodywork for any damage. Request a vehicle history check to ensure the car hasn't been written off or stolen. Verify the mileage and MOT history. Arrange a test drive and consider having a mechanic inspect the car before making a purchase. Ensure all paperwork, including the V5C (log book), is in order.
When buying a pet, always visit the animal in person to assess its health and temperament. Ask about its history, including vaccinations and any known health issues. Ensure the seller is a responsible breeder or owner and can provide relevant documentation. Be wary of sellers who are unwilling to provide information or allow you to see the animal's living conditions. Research the specific needs of the animal before committing to the purchase. Note that selling pets from a public place is illegal in some circumstances.
Gumtree is primarily a platform for private sales, meaning consumer rights are more limited than when buying from a retailer. The principle of 'buyer beware' applies. However, sellers must not misrepresent the items they are selling. If an item is significantly different from the description, you may have grounds for a refund. Keep all communication with the seller and any proof of purchase. For high-value items, consider using a secure payment method that offers buyer protection.
