Be wary of requests to pay via bank transfer or money transfer services before seeing the item. Insist on meeting in person to inspect the item and exchange payment. Avoid deals that seem too good to be true, and be cautious of buyers or sellers who are located overseas or make excuses to avoid meeting in person. Report any suspicious activity to Gumtree and the police.

When buying from a private seller, your rights are more limited than when buying from a business. The principle of 'buyer beware' applies. The seller must accurately describe the item, and it must be of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose, but there are no implied guarantees. Thoroughly inspect the item before purchasing, and ask the seller questions about its condition and history. Keep a record of all communication with the seller.
Firstly, try to resolve the issue directly with the other party through respectful communication. If you cannot reach an agreement, consider using Gumtree's reporting system to flag the issue. For more serious disputes, you may need to seek legal advice or consider alternative dispute resolution methods such as mediation. Citizens Advice can offer free and impartial advice.
Yes. When selling a vehicle, you must ensure it is roadworthy and provide the buyer with the necessary documentation, including the V5C registration document. You are legally obliged to inform the DVLA of the change of ownership. For other items, ensure you are not selling counterfeit goods or items that infringe on someone else's intellectual property rights. It is illegal to sell stolen goods.
