43If your Volkswagen's alarm light isn't flashing when locking, it's typically because the vehicle hasn't properly secured or there's a fault in the anti-theft system. In UK models like the Golf or Polo, this often occurs when doors, boot or bonnet aren't fully closed, the engine is still running (in keyless models), or due to sensor/electrical faults.
The main reasons your VW alarm light won't flash include:
- Incomplete locking procedure:
- All doors, boot and bonnet must be properly closed
- Engine must be fully off (especially important for keyless start models like Tiguan)
- Check all doors are locked by trying to open them
- Anti-theft system faults:
- Faulty door/boot/bonnet sensors (common in older UK models)
- Blown fuse for hazard lights (check fuse box diagram specific to your model)
- Wiring issues between alarm module and indicators
- Faulty alarm control unit
For UK Volkswagen owners, we recommend:
- First perform a full system reset by disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes
- Check all door/boot/bonnet switches are working (listen for locking mechanism sounds)
- Consult your owner's manual for model-specific alarm system details
- For persistent issues, use Volkswagen's UK diagnostic system at an authorised dealer (especially for newer electric models like ID.3)
Note that some UK-spec Volkswagens (particularly 2018+ models) have different alarm light patterns - your owner's manual will confirm what's normal for your vehicle.
