The most common reasons for indicators flashing too fast in UK cars are a blown bulb, poor contact, mismatched bulb wattage/type, or relay failure.

In UK vehicles like the Vauxhall Corsa, Ford Fiesta, or MINI Hatchback, indicators (also called direction indicators or blinkers) are safety-critical lights that alert other road users when you're turning. Modern cars typically use LED indicators controlled by the Body Control Module (BCM), while older models may use thermal flasher relays.

When your indicator flashes abnormally fast (often double the normal rate), check these key points:

  1. Bulb failure - Most modern UK cars will hyper-flash when a bulb blows (e.g. rear indicator on a Volkswagen Golf)
  2. Incorrect bulb replacement - Using 21W bulbs where 10W is specified (common in older BMW 3 Series)
  3. Poor earth connection - Corrosion in bulb holders (frequent issue with Land Rover Defender)
  4. Faulty relay - Especially in pre-2000 vehicles like the Ford Focus MK1
  5. Wiring issues - Damaged looms or connectors (known problem in some Renault Clio models)

For newer electric vehicles like the Tesla Model 3 or Nissan Leaf, fast flashing usually indicates a CAN bus communication error with the lighting module rather than traditional bulb issues. Always consult your vehicle handbook before attempting repairs, as incorrect bulb types can trigger warning lights on the dashboard.
