13When the engine temperature warning light illuminates in your UK car, it typically indicates an issue with the cooling system that requires immediate attention. The three most common causes are: low coolant level, faulty radiator fan, or water pump failure.
- Low coolant level: Check for leaks in your cooling system, particularly around hoses, radiator and water pump. Popular UK models like the Vauxhall Corsa or Ford Focus are particularly prone to coolant leaks from the thermostat housing.
- Faulty radiator fan: Modern UK cars like the Nissan Qashqai or BMW 1 Series use electric cooling fans that can fail due to motor or relay issues, especially during summer traffic jams on the M25 or other busy motorways.
- Water pump failure: Common in higher-mileage vehicles, symptoms include coolant leaks from the pump's weep hole (visible on most UK-spec cars) or unusual noises from the timing belt area. The Mini Cooper S is known for water pump issues around 60,000 miles.
If the warning light comes on while driving, immediately reduce speed and find a safe place to stop to prevent engine damage. For UK motorists, it's advisable to call breakdown cover if you're unsure about continuing your journey.
