After a car is painted, it can take two days to dry in the high temperatures of summer; in winter, the drying time depends on the temperature and can take up to four to seven days; if baking is applied, it can dry in two hours.

For cases where the car is painted and picked up on the same day, it is recommended to wait two days before washing it; if the vehicle is kept well-ventilated and at adequate humidity, it can be washed after 6-7 hours; if the paint is dry, the car can be washed two days after the paint has dried; if the car is painted in a paint booth, since the vehicle has already stayed in the booth for 3-4 hours, it can be washed immediately after being taken out.

If the car has just been painted, be careful not to expose the newly painted areas to water or dust. It is best not to drive it out on rainy days. The fresh paint is still delicate and can leave marks if exposed to rain, which may look unsightly and sometimes cannot be removed even by polishing; it is best to park the car in a garage at night; as for sunlight, there is no need to worry—it only speeds up the drying process, which is beneficial.

From a mechanic’s perspective, drying times vary by paint system. A basic acrylic enamel might feel dry in 4-6 hours but needs 24 hours before reassembly. Two-pack paints, often used in professional garages, cure chemically and can handle light use after 12 hours. Always check the technical datasheet for the specific product used. Avoid exposing fresh paint to rain or dust during this period.

Car paint typically takes between 24 to 48 hours to dry to the touch, but full curing can take up to 30 days. The exact time depends on factors like paint type, environmental conditions, and application method. Water-based paints, commonly used today, dry faster (1-2 hours to touch) but still require 24 hours before handling. Solvent-based paints may take longer (6-8 hours to touch). For best results, avoid washing or waxing the car for at least two weeks to allow proper curing.

Temperature and humidity play a significant role. Ideal conditions are 20-25°C with 50-70% humidity. Cold or damp weather extends drying time. Modern paints, like those used on a Tesla Model 3 or Ford Focus, often include hardeners that speed up the process. Professional spray booths with controlled environments can reduce drying time significantly.

For minor touch-ups, drying may take less time, but full durability is only achieved after complete curing. If you’re repainting at home, ensure proper ventilation and follow manufacturer guidelines. Rushing the process can lead to imperfections like orange peel or bubbling.
