Description
A Kala KA-C Concert Ukulele.
The label does not give the model name, for some reason, but I have a Kala KA-CE which is identical (but has the built-in piezo pickup), so this must be the KA-C.
This instrument has been in the wars!
It had had the neck broken off and reglued (not by me) and when I got it the 14th fret was missing - as this is where the neck broke. The 7th fret was bent at the lower edge where the fretboard had hit something.
I've straightened and glued down the 7th fret. This made the instrument playable straight away.
To be honest, how many uke players go to the 14th fret or beyond? But the gap in the frets was annoying me, so I had to do something about it. I bought a replacement fret for the 14th and fitted it, then gave all the frets a level, crown and polish.
There's some minor damage to the edge of the soundboard (see photo) where a tiny bit of veneer has come away and the veneer around this area was loose. This has been glued to stop any more veneer coming off. The tuning machines have been re-positioned to better alignment. (I think they were poorly fitted at the factory, but they may also have been knocked when the uke suffered its trauma.) The tops of the tuning capstans are a bit pitted with rust. I've cleaned off as much as I can. This is just cosmetic though.
It's now perfectly playable again.
I would have kept this for my own use, as it was the only Concert Uke I had, but since I got this I acquired a KA-CE, which has the added piezo pickup.
This Kala model has a good reputation, and sells new for between £70 and £100.
Cash on collection only from B45 8PN.
